Top 8 restaurants in Tupiza, Bolivia

January 29, 2018 Vergie Nakamoto

Tupiza is a city in Potosí Department, Bolivia. It is located at an elevation of about 2850 m. The population is 25,709 (2012 estimate). Tupiza and its environs are characterized by dramatic red escarpments which jut ruggedly skyward from the coarse, gray terrain; green agricultural land adjacent to the Tupiza River provides welcome respite from the otherwise arid, thorny surroundings. The area quebradas are susceptible to flash flood runoff from sudden cloudbursts.

El Alamo Tupiza

This is really the only option if you are looking for a restaurant with variety in the menu. Other options are pizza and fried chicken. The menu offered Bolivian food, sandwiches, steak, Mexican food and salads. A clean restaurant with good service - full each night we ate there.

Good Italian AND Mexicaan food! Very friendly. Good for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

Ordered a lasagne which took around 35-40 minutes to arrive. Service was on the slow side, but seemed as if the food was made from scratch with fresh ingredients. Very tasty and filling, for two mains with soft drink the bill came to just under 90Bs. Worth a visit if you're not in a hurry!

Milan Center

Tupiza was the one town in South America that seems to have almost entirely low-grade restaurants. Apparently most of them are owned by the same extended family (don't know about Milan).
After our first diabolical experience eating out in Tupiza we tried here - and went there 2 nights in a row.
Food is pretty good, although the pasta I had on the second night was very poor - in contrast to my parents dishes - local specialities - that they said were excellent.
The service, though. Seemed to have no clue and no interest - and they seemed to be constantly running to the local shops for stock which begs the question as to any sense of anyone being in charge at all. Most of the time it seemed to be a 15 year old lad doing everything except the cooking.
Ice cream sundaes are good, if you can get the staff to admit they actually serve them!

Ristorante Italiana

Be aware that there are several "ristorante italiana"s in Tupiza. This review is for the one 50m down the same street and on the same side as Hotel Mitru (which it appears to be from the photo).
We ordered 3 meals - chicken, lasagna and veg lasagna which was what I had. I have never tasted anything in a restaurant so bad, or that looked as unappetising - a white lasagna with bits of green and orange in it, featuring cauliflower and carrot, with no evidence of cheese. Of the other two meals, the normal lasagne was OK (and at least LOOKED like lasagna) and the chicken was severely frost-burnt and dry. They didn't do desserts anyway, so went elsewhere.
Avoid.

After eating chicken everyday for as long as I remember it was nice to get some other meat!
Go for the beef (not pork).
60BOBS (approx £6) for a couple of big chunks of meat, rice, potato and salad - bargain.
The guy/chef that serviced us was very pleasent, spoke enough English to confirm that our broken Spanish was correct in what we were ordering.
Serve red and white wine as well as beer and other soft drinks
