Ang-Gio's Restaurant

Reviewed By Bob F - Beaverton, Michigan

Traveling in the far-eastern reaches of Michigan's upper peninsula, we found ourselves in Cedarville, and a little overdue for lunch. We found Ang-Gio's restaurant open and buzzing, even in the frozen off-season for this boat-centric paradise. The service was very prompt, very friendly and they even accommodated my lovely bride's dietary restrictions without any hesitation. We had the Chicken Parmigiana with a great salad and a generous basket of fresh Italian Bread. Salad we fresh and crisp, the bread was freshly baked with crispy crust and chewy inside, and generous portion of Chicken Parm was excellent. We have been there before, and always find the place clean and the salad bar well-stocked. The decor is just starting to show its age, but the large nautical map of the area displayed on the wall is very interesting, as are the historical photos. Highly recommended!

We came in late to Hessel Marina and were looking for light appetizers at the LCCS and we weren't disappointed. Walking distance from the Marina, there is outside patio as well as inside seating. We had the shrimp cocktail and whitefish pate both prepared and presented beautifully. Perfect ending to a great day.

The Islander Bar

Reviewed By Stategt - Traverse City, Michigan

We weren't impressed, but it may be because we were there during the Boat Show that brings thousands of people into this little community in the Upper Peninsula for the second weekend of August every year.
There were lots of young ladies waiting on the tables and bar, but service wasn't great. We ate at the bar and ended up asking multiple waitresses for things we needed. We saw 5 friends there at one table who waited 30 minutes to get their drink and food order taken. They waited another 15 minutes plus for their drinks and a total of an hour and twenty minutes for their food. To say they weren't happy is an understatement.
I ordered the pulled pork sandwich. Even with a tiny dollop of bbq sauce, it was really dry. I had to ask for more sauce, which took a while to get. The sandwich wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good. It seemed like almost everything on the menu was $9.99.
I think the main problem was disorganization. I could be wrong, but the waitresses seemed to be serving either too many tables because the outside area and the inside dining rooms are large or the table assignments weren't clear. The waitresses were all very nice and trying to do a good job, but the kitchen couldn't keep up with the huge crowd of people that descends on Hessel for the Boat Show weekend.
We heard from other friends who went there the evening before that their wait was very long also. There aren't many restaurants in the area, so they really don't need to improve as this is one of very few restaurants in walking distance to the harbor and Marina.
Maybe lunch service is different. If you don't care how long you wait, this will do.

Cattails Cove

Reviewed By Stategt - Traverse City, Michigan

We've eaten here before when we've been in Cedarville. The food is always consistently good. We were there with a large group 2 days before the Led Cheneaux Boat Show that brings thousands of people into the area. We happened to be there on Mexican Night. Almost every guy in our group ordered the burritos. They were very happy with their choices. I had the coconut shrimp which was very good. The food was hot and had't sat under a warming light.
The service here was great. We were in a group of ten boat exhibitors. There was another group of 20. The staff didn't miss a beat. They arranged tables for us. We ended up outside on the deck with a roof over our heads. It rained while we were out there, but we stayed dry and comfortable.
The staff does a great job of preparing for the onslaught of Boat Show people. It's the last big hurrah of the Summer Season. I wouldn't be surprised , if we had a long wait for our food and drinks, but everything arrived in good time.
If you're in the area, plan on lunch or dinner here.

We stopped in and had a family gathering and ate lunch. The place has been completely remodeled, updated and you can watch your food being made in front of you. The lunch was delicious! The only negative thing that I could say now is under the new ownership really needs to staff more or be darn sure to appreciate what they do have. The cook was bringing the food to people, clearing tables, she was doing dishes, was running the register and friendly while doing so. I would have cried! Great job. Just unfortunate the owners don't care as much as their cook does.

Les Cheneaux Distillers

Reviewed By Mike S

We had the pleasure of stopping here during our trip up to Drummond Island last weekend. I have to say a brewery/distillery is something that the eastern upper peninsula is sorely missing. Once you cross the Bridge your only option is a couple breweries in Sault Ste Marie otherwise you are out of luck.

We were there early evening on Saturday and the place was pretty hopping for an area that really doesn't seem to have a lot of people outside of the summer months. We did however manage to get a spot at the bar, which is my chosen location when visiting these places. I feel like you get a better feel of the place when you are right in the thick of it.

I wish I had taken some pictures of the inside, but it's very tastefully decorated in a newish industrial feel with a mix of new corrugated metal and old timber. The poured concrete counter top, while not the most comfortable to sit at, was a nice touch on the decor.

We ordered a variety of drinks. All of their drinks center around their house distilled vodka, which in itself is very smooth. We had Bloody Barys, an apple cider Mule, and a flight of all 7 of their beers. That's right, they make beer too. To me a Bloody Mary is all about how you spice it and what you garnish it with since most people use a similar off the shelf mix...you get super bonus points when you have house made mix. I think they probably used something like the Zing Zang, which is fine by me. It had a little heat, which was good and the garnishment was good as well. I always like it when you get a piece of cheese. I ended up grabbing a bottle of their vodka for our collection.

All of the beers on the flight were good and I think as this place gets more time under their belt they will really shine. The one thing to mention was their blonde. Usually they are pretty mellow, but this one was like 7 or 8% and sure didn't drink like it.

They do offer food and the pizzas looked good. They appeared to have a very thin crust, which I love. But I can't speak more about them beyond that because we had eaten dinner before we got there.

After we had finished our drinks we asked about a tour jokingly, but were quickly met with an enthusiastic yes. We were given a quick look around the place and saw the behind the scenes magic thanks to Katie. My memory fails, but I believe she is the wife of the distiller, so she had a pretty solid insight into the whole process and was able to answer any question I could throw at her.

All in all this was a great place that is relatively new. I think as they grow a bit they are going to become even better and be a real force in the UP spirit scene. I highly recommend taking the detour if you are near the area and stopping by.

I know we will be going there again for sure even if I hadn't promised to when I stopped back in Sunday on our way home to pick something up ;)

We stopped in to see what they had and left with bread, smoked fish and a pasty. Fish is fantastic. Didn't get to try any fresh fish. This is not a restaurant.
