The location is brilliant because you can go west toward Lake Union or East toward Union Bay. I did the latter. The paddle club gave me a laminated map. I love kayaking on Portage Bay because it is very peaceful. There are hardly any boats, unlike Lake Union which is busy. I went through the Montlake Cut - a thin channel between lakes. They mark this on the map as an area to exercise caution. Keeping right, you are fine and it is not too busy. However be aware that coming back you will need to go against the flow of the water and it is hard work. Don’t go down Montlake Cut if you are not ready to get some exercise coming back. Once in Union Bay I kept right and went past Foster Island. Turning right, I went under the road bridge and a low bridge which felt kind of exciting because only a kayak could get through there. I found myself in the waters separating the Arboretum and Foster Island. There were water lilies everywhere with a path of water separating the patches. I was delighted to see many turtles on semi submerged logs. Continuing along channels I got to a small, still, pond, and enjoyed the bird life - a bald eagle, gray heron and some swallow like birds swooping over the water. Emerging the other end of the lake I completed my trip around the channels surrounding the islands. On emerging into Union Bay I went north and found myself within about 15 foot of a bald eagle perched on a log. It was majestic. It was an amazing trip. One of my favorite things I have done in Seattle. A bonus is that above the Paddle Club is the Agua Verde Cafe, where I always enjoy some fresh, light and colorful Mexican food.
