Top 8 Nature & Parks in Protaras, Famagusta District

May 17, 2022 Leonardo Torrence

Family-friendly and tranquil, Protaras is situated along the sandy coastline of Cyprus's Fig Tree Bay. The glorious beach is the main attraction—just be sure to keep a delightfully wary eye peeled for the legendary Ayia Napa Sea Monster. Giggle about the creepy creature over Cypriot specialties at one of the many open-air seafood restaurants in town.

Ocean Aquarium

I generally rely on tripadvisor and on this occasion I reserved judgement, thinking it can't be that bad and if I considered the majority of reviews here, the place would be shut down. And I'm very glad I went there! I don't know why some of the reviewers said it was dirty or they saw neglected animals, far from it and I went with someone who volunteers at an animal welfare centre in the UK. Another member of my party works in a large pet shop specializing in aquarium fish and both were very pleased with the condition of all the animals and fish. None of the fish had disease and no dirty tanks in sight. The birds were also beautiful with no plucked feathers in sight, the whole place looked well maintained and spotless. As for the exhibits, it may not be Seaworld, or the biggest Aquarium in Europe, neither are the prices. The Penguins, looked happy in an environment control enclosure, yes the smell isn't pleasant and their excrement is around, but have you seen Penguins in the wild? I feel fortunate that I have seen many different types in their native environment and trust me, they smell a lot worse in the wild! Rant over, If you have a few hours to spare, or just want to get out of the midday, please give it a go. An Aquarium with the added bonus of interacting with a monkey, or seeing a few raccoons chilling, this place is worth a visit.
