Family lunch and both liked the attractive airy decor. Broad menu with daily specials. Bar nearby as well as coffee/cake station. The pasta a hit; not so the chicken and vegetable soup special. Tasted ok but pumpkin coloured chicken and lentils fell short of expectation. Coffee and cake (tiramisu and poppy seed orange) enjoyable. Will go back as it’s welcoming and relaxing to try something else on menu. Consider joining as discounted food/drinks available.

Dined here last night for a Birthday dinner ,family group of 17 of us consisting of various ages. Overall the food and atmosphere wasn't bad . Bearing in mind we have eaten here many times previously when it was under the old management. Also knowing this is a casual restaurant with pub style meals . Main issues last night , All meals took absolutely ages to be served ,with many at our table commenting you wouldn't want to be starving all the while noting that not all the tables were even occupied ! As you order at the bar and pay this aspect is great saving the dramas of bill splitting for a large group at the end of the evening .Service was pretty much a let down ,the girl serving meals coming to the table standing at the end quietly announcing what she was serving in a rowdy restaurant .Each and every time it was someone at our table relaying at a bigger voice what she was serving .She made zero effort to smile or interact with anyone at our table . At the end of dinner we had to pile up the plates ourselves in order to have the birthday cake, the girl had started to remove 3 of them but then decided to move on to doing something elsewhere in a now empty restaurant . As she had asked previously how was everything ,When she did return to the table to continue clearing we politely informed her that the food was good however could she please convey to the chef or her boss that 3 of the dinners which were the Veal Scallopini were very underwhelming ,all 3 of us who ordered it found the veal virtually inedible. It was dry and tough .Pretty much overcooked to boot ! We were all quite certain we were not even served veal ,more it was a cheap minute steak !When we said this to the girl she barely acknowledged it and walked off ,that was it. We left soon after with all the staff seeing us leave and not one goodbye ,thanks for coming ,see you again . The previous owner may have had his share of complaints on various issues at this restaurant but he always made his way around the tables ensuring all was well ,the wait staff were heaps better as well .They actually interacted with you and seemed to enjoy their job ! It never ceases to amaze me why restaurant managers employ young staff who clearly have zero people skills and don't seem to give a rats a..s about their job . Not in a rush to head back there ,which is a real shame as they could really be so much better and a perfect place for local families to dine . They need to pull their sox up in the service area and actually eat the meals they offer on the menu on occasion to judge if they are worthy of serving or not as well !

This is our local and within walking distance from our house. We have been there a handful of times for breakfast and were always happy with our meals and the service! We decided to go for breakfast this morning, We ordered drinks first, orange juice for me, iced coffee for my partner and a choc milkshake for our 3 year old! Even though it was a hot day we decided on sitting outside in a shady spot under the tree, drinks were served within 5 minutes and were nice and refreshing our 3 year old gulped down the choc milkshake and said it was yummy! We ended up sitting inside while waiting for our meals as it was getting too hot outside, it was nice and cool inside with the a/c on! Our meals were served quickly and were delicious. I tried the eggs benedict for the first time and loved it! my partner got the big breakfast and our daughter shared some of his meal, they were both pleased with their meal. If you're in Richmond check this place out the meals are delicious, prices are good and the service is excellent!

We arrived with a group of about 16 people for a birthday celebration! Greeted by welcoming staff, an open fire and great decor, this place gets the small details right. We devoured the meat platter, $150 for an absolute feast, it fed 4 of us with leftovers for tomorrow’s lunch! Quality beers on tap and a nice selection of boutique stuff in the fridge. Bar man really knows his stuff and crafted some great cocktails - try the jalepeno watermelon! An excellent wine list and the whisky is on point! Everyone had a great night, the service was good and the ambience of the place ties it all together. A great spot to enjoy a nice meal and a celebration! Thanks so much for taking the time to review us. The team at Barrels & Ashes really appreciates your feedback. Super glad you enjoyed your time with us and hope to see you again soon!

We went to The Royal Hotel on 2 consecutive Saturday evenings. On the first Saturday there was a very nice young blonde girl serving behind the bar. She was very polite and welcoming. We ordered 2 steaks 2 fish and chips and a chicken dish. All were very good. On the following Saturday there was a young dark haired girl serving behind the bar who was totally opposite to the blonde bar person the previous week. When I asked for a Heineken lager and lime she proceeded to put the lime into the neck of the bottle. When I said at 70 yrs of age I wasn’t going to sit and drink my drink from the bottle I wanted a glass she huffed and puffed. The food order was also taken by her in a most unfriendly fashion.
