Given city rights in 1233, it has long been at the center of conflicts because of its strategic location on the banks of the Rhine River. The Battle of Arnhem, part of Operation Market Garden, was fought in September 1944. Advancing Allied forces, in large part due to a series of mistakes, failed to secure a key bridge and suffered defeat, delaying the Allied advance into Germany until the following spring. The 1977 movie "A Bridge Too Far" was based on the events here.

My cruise would be docking in Amsterdam, Dirk suggested using the train system to get to Arnhem. When I confirmed that this would be possible he put together a detailed suggested tour and also included a train time table that would make this tour work. We met at Arnhem Centraal station and the tour covering the 4th Para brigade was off and running. Dirk's presentation was clear and concise and he was able to answer all my questions with no hesitation. Since this was a very specific tour I had read up on this part of the battle before and was prepared because my time in Arnhem was time limited. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in this WW2 battle. I would also recommend that when you book it ask Dirk to recommend a book to read to prepare you for the tour. An absolute must. Our tour guide Hemelinde was brilliant and extremely accommodating. There was a confusion as to the meeting point however she rearranged her schedule to fit us in later in the day .
