Veterans' Memorial Park

Reviewed By AJ M - Plover, Wisconsin

The park is a nice park in the middle of town, down in a sort of "bar area" in older buildings. There are a number of events and picnics held there over the summer months. It's very well manicured, and the views of the river aren't too bad- granted all the industrial buildings on the opposite bank don't bother you. In fact, there's nothing inherently wrong with this park at all... save for one, shall we say, creepy tidbit.

For whatever reason, this park is a prime spot for all sorts of people to scatter their loved one's ashes. Now, I'm not one to criticize anyone's beliefs or anything like that, but I do find it rather unsettling that this is allowed in this public space to begin with, even while other events like the aforementioned picnic are underway. I don't know, it just doesn't feel right walking around in what I'd equate to a burial place, considering all the people that have done this over the years. In all other regards, this is a fine park, so if the aforementioned doesn't bother you, by all means check it out.

Learned a lot about the paper mill industry. Not only the history but about the tools used in the early days of the industry. What a shame the paper mill in Port Edwards closed!!! Such a tragic loss for the area.

Brings back memories from years back when this was the T.B. Scott Library. The location and building are picturesque. Flowers are well tended in the summer time. Lori is such a tremendous asset and help when you go there with questions. Plan to spend more time there this summer. There is much more to do and see there.

Whetstone's Antiques

I've visited and bought from here several times. The place is very well laid-out, in an old farm house, and occasionally in an outdoor barn.
You won't get Chippendale furniture or Ming vases here, but you might find an extremely well-crafted chest of drawers or a family dining table. Many of the antiques are practical, in that they look good, but can also still be used for their original purpose.
Prices are very reasonable too.

Central Wisconsin Cultural Center

This destination in the Rapids community offers unique surprises of many kinds, which differ periodically, as the themes for the current displays change. You'll find art pieces presented by local artists, jewelry displays, and a small gift shop; many of the art works are for sale. There is no charge to visit the exhibits. Classes, workshops, and musical events are offered. The day I visited with a group of five out-of-state friends, we were greeted by friendly/welcoming staff, which included a gentleman who willingly and passionately shared his life experiences living in this "cranberry community", including the historic past and changes in the paper industry, which was critical in forming the area. Hours differ on various days of the week, so check the schedule, online.
