Top 7 Things to do in Sosua, Dominican Republic

March 13, 2018 Phylicia Berquist

Sosua is everything you want a beach town to be. Clear waters teem with coral, perfect for snorkeling and diving. Above sea level you’ll find multicolored sands lined with beach shacks. This small enclave of the Dominican Republic was once a haven for Jewish refugees. Historic sites and synagogues offer great perspective on Sosua’s postwar identity. On a lighter note, a community of ex-pats helps fuel a boisterous, international nightlife scene.

Beach Alicia

Alicia beach is worth visiting. If you wish, you can rent sun chairs. There is a volleyball net which is available for everyone. Just take your own ball with you. What is not said very clearly is that you should be careful with strong waves. There has happened several serious accidents because people have underestimated the power of the sea. There are not any shower or toilet facilities on the beach. Anyway, we loved the beach.

Lots of vendors, so take your time finding the right spot for your beach chair and umbrella, usually it's about 200-300 DR Dollars for both. Lots of restaurants, so you can find something to eat. You can even get mani-pedis and massages right on the beach. The view is nice, the water is refreshing and not to many waves.

Castillo Mundo King

Reviewed By Travelbound44 - Rotonda West, Florida

Iguana Mama's rep Kathy brought us to the Mundo King castle from the Amber cove area for a bizzare, fun filled day. This is not a cruise ship excursion so it's half the price and a day that you will never forget. Were picked up near port in an air conditioned SUV that provided free wi-fi within vehicle and endless rum drinks. Kathy gave us so much information and history of the areas we drove through our heads were spinning! The castle has some of the most beautiful carvings in wood or stone you may ever see. The theme from the owner is aliens and voodoo and he doesn't dissapoint. This castle is 5 stories and you will see art like never before. Afterwards it's off to Sosua beach which provides chairs, umbrella and tables while you await a delicious bbq lunch made fresh on an oil drum type grill. The ribs and chicken are slow cooked to perfection, the sides melt in your mouth. Plenty of souvenier hunting along the beach. Views are spectacular. By the end of your excursion you will feel as if Kathy is family. Fernando the driver is very pleasant and makes sure your glass is flowing. This might be the best day we have had as an excursion at a port and we have taken 17 cruises. Most importantly it was less expensive and more fun than ship excursions and that's a winning combination. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! The castle is a very unique experience.

Great experience! My daughter has taken tennis lessons at International Tennis School for a few years. Ilia's a private instructor who can teach/train you one-on-one or in a group, while tailoring the session to your specific needs. Over the summer, we also attended summer camp at Sosua ocean village with Ilia and Vojt and now we keep up with progressive tennis lessons. Ilia has the amazing experience of dealing with kids at different ages and levels of experience and technique, encouraging while challenging to improve the kids performance on the court. Highly recommended.

This was located right next to our hotel, Casa Marina, & details the acceptance of displaced Jews during WW2. There was a 75th. anniversary celebration of their arrival in 2015. Admission is 4 US$ and is worth it.

Would have liked to attend a service here however we were not sure of the location nor how to get there. A notice at the hotel would have helped.
