James River Reeling and Rafting

We had planned on tubing down the James River, but the weather did not cooperate. It was overcast, misting and about 20 degrees cooler than we expected. The folks at James River Reeling and Rafting outfitted us with canoes instead of tubes and we had a great time floating down the James. They have designated safe parking, shuttle up river and hot showers after they meet you upon your return. Definitely will return.

James River Brewery

James River Brewery is a microbrewery housed in historic, 19th century brick warehouse on Scottsville's main street. Come enjoy our craft beers in our tasting room or in the beer garden alongside Mink Creek. As of March 2015 we have new owners, new brewers, a new brewing system, and new staff.

A nice small brewery. Did not realize there was space in back of the entrance. What to like about it-small enough to strike up a conversation with the workers or patrons, although a small collection of beers on tap at any one time enough variety to satisfy hop heads or those who likes Stouts like myself, beer not bad. So glad that I tried this as I plan on taking a group of friends next summer to tube the river, but it will include a visit to the brewery as well (although I will be back before then). No food here, but several decent restaurants within a block or two.

I was traveling along VA-6 and came across this vineyard's open sign. I travelled up the short road to the tasting house and was delighted immediately. I met Leslie Cushnie, who along with her husband own the estate, and she takes care of the vines. Also, met Kim who runs the tasting room.

I had a tasting, only $7.50. I added a warm baguette, a sausage and some locally made cheese - all very good. The tasting room has several tables inside and out, perfect for groups. The view of the vines and the owners' beautiful house is beautiful. They have special events iften including live music on various evenings, and are active participants in the community and as a part of community events.

It's not a place that comes up on the radar normally, but WELL worth a little trek out of the way! I can't wait to go back.

We came here the other day and had a great time walking through. It is really neat to see the way that the boats are displayed. It definitely makes you stop and think about river transportation and how important the James River has been and still is to the community. Besides the history, it is a beautiful spot to sit and have a snack, let kids run around, etc. I definitely recommend checking it out if you are in the area!

With so many tasting options in the area, including some that are more interested in being pretentious, it is nice to find a place that seems genuine and the employees show that. Not overly crowded and great views. Very fun and helpful staff who appear to enjoy what they are doing.

Can get some smaller snacks there, not a full meal). Cheese, crackers and the like.

Put Blenheim on your list. Nice selection of reds and whites and most should be able to find something they enjoy.

This is an excellent place to learn about and taste local wines. The staff is very knowledgeable and happy to answer questions about their wines. The tasting involves 7 or 8 of their wines with a detailed explanation of each. There are also advanced flights that you can purchase for additional cost.

After the tasting, each of us purchased a glass of wine and sat out on First Colony's beautiful deck. What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon!
