Fort Patiko - Baker's Fort

Reviewed By MrWoppel - State of Bremen, Germany

The fort itself is worth a visit, when you´re in Gulu anyway. Approx. 40min- 1 hours’ drive from the city it´s situated in a nice rural area and local guides will show you around (10.000 UGX/Person). The stories of the previous slave trading post are quite disturbing but the remains of it are rather interesting.
There is also a nice opportunity to take a little walk in the surrounding area and climb one of the close hills for fantastic views. For this it´s advisable to bring proper footwear and long trousers as it can get very bushy (especially after the rainy season) and you might find have to find your own track…

St Josephs Catholic Cathedral

One of the largest churches in Uganda. The architecture and history are worth the trip. Try to go on Sunday so you can see the mural on the ceiling inside as well as the two Bishops that are preserved in the church. Very interesting place with lots of local history. Make sure you go with someone who can tell you all about the history!

TAKS Community Art Centre

Our group practically bought out this place! A very friendly welcome in an interesting, commune-feeling location. Beautiful facility with lots of open space. I saw an internet lounge, bar, traditional huts for rent, and much more. We were there for the crafts and art, and TAKS did not disappoint. I don't like how many items don't have prices on them -- you had to ask -- but the prices still seemed fair and the items were lovely. There aren't many shopping destinations for tourists in Gulu, but this is a must-stop!

Wawoto Kacel Cooperative Society

Reviewed By grenille - grenille

Our group had a wonderful visit to Wawoto Kacel. The cooperative's members make beautiful, excellent quality products. Amani's quality is slightly better, but Wawoto Kacel has a much larger variety of items for purchase. Wawoto's specialty is the finely detailed paper beads. They are so beautiful and so durable that it is hard to believe that they are made of paper, but they are. Other items include handbags, clothes, decorative items, holiday items... too much to mention. Definitely worth a visit while in Gulu.

Amani Ya Juu

I can't believe there are no other reviews of this place on TripAdvisor yet! Amani is a workshop, collective, refuge and wonderful shop. If you've stopped at the Kabalega Diner on your way north, you've already seen the magnificent goods these women produce.
The women of Amani have come from exceptionally difficult backgrounds. They work together to make beautiful products that represent their culture and that appeal to visitors. When you stop in, Simprosa will tell you her story, and the women there will share their experiences with you. Then you have a chance to shop their beautiful creations. For visitors to Uganda, this is a must-see. Items for sale include all kinds of purses and bags, table linens, toys and decorations, jewelry, holiday items and much more.
