Bluefields (Spanish pronunciation: [bluˈfjelds]) is the capital of the South Caribbean Autonomous Region (RACS) in Nicaragua. It was also the capital of the former Zelaya Department, which was divided into North and South Caribbean Coast Autonomous Regions. It is located on Bluefields Bay at the mouth of the Escondido River in the municipality of the same name.

We walked up here after lunch at Mini Hotel and ice cream at Sorbeteria Nyah. Front and center is large statue of 6 young men holding products and supporting a flame. Huge trees planted in pairs frame the corners, a nice bandstand in the center, and a wall of bright murals along the north. With kids playing, adults occupying brightly painted benches, and a troupe of uniformed students having a meeting, this is a vibrant community park.

You can easily get to El bluff by Panga from Bluefields just make sure to get together a big group or to get early to the port because the boat will not leave if it is not full

Just 240 meters up the street from our Hotel Jackani, we passed by here going into town. Finally, today it was open. The entry personnel called a young lady who retrieved the key to open the upstairs collection.
Speaking English, she pointed out the old wall map where the British drew the straight border line down through Nicaragua delineating the Moskito Territory. We spotted the wooden model for the Main Plaza's statue to the 6 indigenous peoples and their products. Examining several saddle mill(quern) stones, I spotted the pictures of Kurka Hill; the three 25' pre-Mayan stone pyramids discovered in 2003 just 40 miles north. After passing a collection of old typewriters and radios, we came to a score of pictures of the devastation of the1988 Hurricane, where we could spot many of the changes.
For this small community, this is an important museum and is deserves a visit.

Each day, we walked 450 meters up from our Hotel Jackani. This morning, we were able to gain access as the custodian was pulling the bell tower ropes signaling the approaching 9:30AM service. The bright white interior had 2 rows of thin columns providing 3 bays to the nave with the wide center arched to the altar.
Outside, a bay front memorial marks the German missionary heritage that built the original church in wood. It was destroyed in 1988 Hurricane Joan, and rebuilt in concrete in1992.
Their properties extend to the large college across the street, several clapboard administration houses nearby and a clinic up the street.

The Moravian Church is very significant in the history of this part of Nicaragua. It only takes a few minutes to tour. If you are interested in the history and the religion of the coastal communities, it is worth visiting.
It is a small, active church with a lot of history. The people are very friendly and welcoming. As churches go it is nice, clean and well maintained but it's primary purpose is to serve it's community, not serve as a tourist attraction. Please be respectful of services and church activities.

Waiku is an Caribbean art center where you'll find products made from local artists where much of our culture is represented. In Waiku we offers classes in painting, drawing and traditional dances like May pole and punta garífuna. Waiku is a beautiful place to take a coffee, read a book and learn about local art. It's the most enjoyable experience you can have in Bluefields!

This beautiful Art Center in the heart of Bluefields welcomes you with good vibes and the lovely team is always happy to give you a little tour. You can see that it is managed by true artists by the love for detail in this place. Apart from that there are activities like Yoga (on Wednesday), poetry nights, painting classes and many more.
Step by and meet the loveliest place in Bluefields, but take care you might not want to leave again.
