Arugam Bay (Tamil: அறுகம் குடா), known locally as "Arugam Kudah", is a bay situated on the Indian Ocean in the dry zone of Sri Lanka's southeast coast, and a historic settlement of the ancient Batticaloa Territory (Mattakallappu Desam). The bay is located 117 kilometres (73 mi) south of Batticaloa, 320 kilometres (200 mi) due east of Colombo, and approximately 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) south of the market town of Pottuvil. The main settlement in the area, known locally as Ullae, is predominantly Muslim, however there is a significant Sri Lankan Tamil and Sinhala population to the south of the village, as well as a number of international migrants, largely from Europe and Australia. While traditionally fishing has dominated the local economy, tourism has grown rapidly in the area in recent years. Arugam Kudah's literal Tamil translation is "Bay of Cynodon dactylon". Tourism in Arugam Bay is dominated by surf tourism, thanks to several quality breaks in the area, however tourists are also attracted by the local beaches, lagoons, historic temples and the nearby Kumana National Park.

Yael is a fantastic yoga teacher. She gives a very thoughtful yoga class that is sympathetic to the needs of the people in the class. She also makes fabulous kombucha called Tea Chi Kombucha. After class she offers a tasting and you can buy bottles of it. Organic and made with a heritage scoby, it helped a lot with a stomach ailment my wife had when we arrived. This is definitely the best place to do yoga, meet great people and drink the best kombucha in Sri Lanka.

Rice & carry is a social enterprise whose aim is not to optimize profits but to empower and positively impact communities on Sri Lanka's east coast. We provide work in a small centralized production unit as well as within homes in different villages. Our makers are women from rural areas who have worked with us to become creative and professional manufacturers. Our shop displays all our products.
Just off the main strip of shops in Arugam Bay and a few minutes walk from the beach, a visit to the Rice & Carry shop is definitely a must-do during a stay in the Arugam area. It's a fantastic and inspiring example of a brilliant local social enterprise tackling problems of employment for women alongside environmental and plastic pollution issues. And the products are amazing - a huge range of bags and a few other items all made from upcycled plastic rice bags, hessian sacks and carrier bags. There are loads of different designs from little purses to sports bags and every item is unique and really high quality. I bought a whole range of products for myself and as perfect gifts for friends back home, which everyone loved! The shop is also a cool place to visit with its rustic, up cycled design and the staff were really friendly and happy to chat about the company and what they are doing. Loved it!

Amazing Healers. Very professional and knows what they are doing. Gemunu has been wonderful every single time I've visited. Does an excellent job relieving all the aches and pains, a beginner surfer like me feeling after everyday in the water for a week. The owner, Sameera is very knowledgable in swimmer's injuries and he will guide his therapists to ensure you are pain-free. I totally recommend them and they are very affordable.

I went to Doctor Jahufer with Fibromyalgia and Polymyalgia that I have had for 2 years. He designed a treatment plan for me for 10 days as that was all the time I had in Arugam Bay. After my 10 day treatment my mind was 100% better and my body was 90% better. Dr Jahufer and my beautiful massage lady Anggie were extremely professional and caring and always wanting to please and make me feel better. I came away a different person worry free, stress free and nearly pain free. Thank you so much Dr Jahufer and Anggie, you have made my life a lot more comfortable - I will be back for sure. This is the one and only place to visit in Arugam Bay for Ayurvedic treatment. Take Care both of you and Many thanks again Anna
