This café is a different and unique experience to the normal café. Firstly you need to book well in advance (at least a few hours, preferably more), it is not a drop in place. However, this is one of its advantages. This way they can source local fresh ingredients for your selection. In our 3 1/2 week trip around both North and South Islands, the 2 meals we had here were an highlight and certainly the best food we had.
The food is somehow a cross between a home cooked meal and a restaurant. For us it captured the best of both. My wife especially liked the lamb shanks while I liked both lamb and duck.
The atmosphere was relaxed with the hosts providing excellent service. It is up high and you look out over the town of Huntly.

From the time you walk into this quaint cafe to the time you leave you are made to feel most welcome. The staff are awesome at what they do from welcoming you to customer service to Devine food. The conveniences are clean and tidy and the cafe spacious.
The food we ordered was so tasty. We did not wait long for our food. Hubby ordered toasted Sandwich I ordered a chicken panini I had a cappuccino hubby had tea. for one.
This place is a gem off the main highway at TAUPIRI.

This review is for the restaurant attached to the Essex Arms. The owners have clearly taken over from The Odd Spoon but (let the record show), even though the printed menus are the same and the Odd Spoon sign is still there to be seen outside, this is definitely not the Odd Spoon which was a wonderful restaurant with lovely little flourishes that made you glad to be there.
Standards have clearly slipped badly and while the waitress was friendly and helpful that is the most that can be said about this place. I ordered an omelette. It took 30 minutes to arrive notwithstanding the fact that there were only seven other people in the restaurant, two of whom had already received their meals and two others who had made selections from the bakery counter. When the omelette finally arrived (after I made a complaint) it was on the leathery side of edible and the so-called "salad" was deeply disappointing with not as much as a vinaigrette to make it vaguely interesting. A couple sitting adjacent to me left over half their meals on the plate. My double espresso was fine but didn't make up for the overall poor production of what I had hoped would be a nice lunch!

Dropped in here on our way to Cambridge, as we needed some lunch and a coffee. Excellent service from Nikki who was so friendly and welcoming.
There’s a good variety of food with quality rolls and sandwiches, nice cakes and hot food. The coffee was excellent.
We’ll be back next Friday Nikki

River Haven Cafe

This is a great place to stop on State Highway 1 and we have done this on a number of occasions. The rest rooms are clean and there is a huge shop selling NZ goods. Food is very 'kiwi' with slices, and pies. It is in a pleasant location on the banks of the Waikato. To be recommended.

Iskender Kebab

Reviewed By wonderwander26 - Auckland, New Zealand

It's a bit pricey but Huntly doesn't have much else to offer by way of good, tasty, nutritious food. Second to Hop in Stopin in Taupiri only.
Note that like Hopin Stopin their hot chips with aoli is quite good.
There's a good amount of space too so this place would be good for groups.
