Le Refuge de l'Arche

unique place in Europe where all the animals have a history. Wounded, captured or abandoned animals in the Ark of Refuge had a life before being greeted: today more than 1 200, representing 150 species on 15 hectares. There's no training, no show. But felines, monkeys, reptiles, bears, birds ... that come to life. Quite simply. Created in 1976 by Christian Huchedé, the association Cepan, recognized public utility since 2014, works for three missions: animal protection, social inclusion, public awareness for animal rights. It manages two distinct activities, the Refuge de l'Arche (1 200 animals, 150 species) and the Wildlife and Environment Centre Local Wild "Valentine Perrin and Jacques" (360 animals supported in 2015).

Good views of all the animals when we visited - and being able to read the stories of how the animals were rescued and ended up in the refuge added to the experience.

Grottes de Saulges - Musee de Prehistoire

Visited one of these caves when staying close by and wish we could have done both! Really interesting and great tour by Sandrine. We had a little trouble booking so be patient! You do need to book in advance as tour numbers are limited. The caves are fascinating and there is currently a lot of archaeological work to find out more about the caves themselves and its inhabitants. Quite low ceilings so not the for the claustrophobic and not for the under 6s (not allowed).

Les Jardins des Renaudies

Stumbled apon this garden on a trip around Font Daniel, and what an unexpected treat! Although small, the garden is lovely to walk around, with great colour and atmosphere. There are even some animals to watch at the far end, and a maise maze to get lost in! On top of that, there is a display of antique farm machinery and equipment, and a lovely little cafe for refreshment. A treat if the weather is good!
