Top 7 Churches & Cathedrals in Carcassonne Center, Occitanie

September 19, 2021 Phylicia Berquist

Step back several centuries and imagine yourself in medieval times. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, La Cite at Carcassonne is a painstakingly restored medieval walled city on a hill by the Aude River. You'll half-expect to see armed lookouts manning the fortified city's towers. Cross the river to La Bastide neighborhood for all the charms of a French country town.

We are located in the heart of La Bastide in Carcassonne (downtown), on the main pedestrian lane and close to the Canal du Midi. Easy to find us we are the one and only chocolate chop located in a Church ! We will welcome you in English, spanish, or even with some swedish, to make you discover our large range of chocolate, almonds, marsipan ... Come and try our ice creams known as the best in town, they are local and most of them organic. In the summer we have some tables outside (terrace with the blue umbrellas) , and inside with air conditioning.

This is an imposing church which exudes a sense of deep history. The stained-glass windows at the altar end of the church – the apse – are beautiful, particularly the two rose windows – one at each end of the transept. I sat there for several minutes gazing at their beauty … and returned two days later to have another look. The windows rivalled anything that I’ve seen on visits to various churches around the world.

What a beautiful old city - have been wanting to visit for some time and I loved it. The old city was lovely and very quiet when we visited as we were out of season but imagine it would be overcrowded in high season. Beautifully maintained and quaint coffee shops.
