Australia’s third-largest city, Brisbane is the hub of Queensland culture, offering a peek at the past and a glimpse into the future. Visit the historic Windmill and Old Commissariat Store, built by convicts in 1828, or fast-forward to the present (and beyond) with a trip to the new Gallery of Modern Art. Mingle with locals atop Mount Coot-tha, cruise the Brisbane River to South Bank’s sandy beach on the City Cat and make sure to fill the cuteness quota at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, home to koalas and kangaroos.

The Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) is a single institution located across two adjacent river-side buildings in the Cultural Precinct at Brisbane's South Bank. QAGOMA holds a collection of historical, modern and contemporary art, and stages a dynamic program of Australian and international exhibitions. We are home to the Children's Art Centre which collaborates on interactive artworks with leading artists from around the world, and the Australian Cinematheque, the only dedicated cinema facility in an Australian art museum. QAGOMA operates its own retail outlets and cafes and restaurants, proceeds from which support the Gallery.
When visiting Brisbane we visited GOMA and loved the current exhibition of the wonderful Margaret Olley paintings, and also the Ben Quilty exhibition. This is an excellent gallery, and the curation was excellent. We would always come back here when visiting Brisbane in the future.

We try to visit this gallery every time in Brisbane, but our last trip was 3 years ago. This time we decided to spend much more time- indeed , over two days we spent 7 hours here and still didn't see everything. We are both gallery tragics and visit galleries all around the world, and this is one of our favourites. Free entry, impressive architecture with delightful water features,,a good cafe and gift shops and a superb collection of art, sculpture, ceramics etc. Far too many iconic artists and sculptors to list , with lots of old friends, both Australian and European, a lovely display of Asian ceramics and art and the brilliant work of Anh Xian. Always something new and interesting- this time Jon Molvig and the Hermannesburg school. A must visit for any art lovers.

Open Tuesday-Friday 10am-5pm, Saturday-Sunday 12pm-4pm. Entry is free. QUT Art Museum is one of Brisbane's leading institutions for the visual arts. The gallery conducts a dynamic exhibition program with an emphasis on contemporary Australian art and design, as well as an extensive education and public engagement program. QUT Art Museum is also home to the QUT Art Collection, one of Queensland's most significant public collections with more than 3,000 pieces including painting, sculptures, decorative arts and works on paper, chiefly by Australian and Queensland artists.
Since opening in 2008, Edwina Corlette has shown a commitment to the long-term promotion of a select group of contemporary artists from Australia and the Asia Pacific region, whose practices employ a range of mediums including painting, sculpture, installation and digital art. Located on Brunswick Street in Brisbane, the gallery offers a diverse, annual curatorial program of solo and group exhibitions, artist talks, collaborations and offsite projects including participation in art fairs, and is recognised as one of Brisbane’s leading contemporary art spaces showcasing emerging and mid-career artists. A testament to this is the gallery’s placement of its artists' work into important institutional collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Artbank, the University of Queensland Art Museum and the Parliament House Collection in Canberra.
