Top 6 Tours in Azuga, Southern Romania

September 26, 2021 Franklyn Hardiman

Azuga is a small resort town nestled in the mountains of Prahova county in the historical region of Muntenia, in Romania. Azuga is located at the foot of the Baiu mountains, and contains the longest ski run in Romania, the Sorica - together with other ski slopes. Formerly heavy industrialized, Azuga retains now a bottled water factory - a leftover from the famous beer factory that brewed Azuga Beer (now produced elsewhere in Romania under license), a sparkling wine factory, wine tasting and lodging (Cramele Rhein, owned by Halewood International). The beer factory, the glassware factory and the wool cloth factory were privatized and now are closed and completely demolished. The refractory materials factory, also privatized, is still standing but it is closed. The town offers a dramatic view over the Bucegi mountains, even from street level and especially from the top of the Sorica mountain (at the gondola arrival station).

Details make the difference is something that definitely describes Traian, he went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and had a great experience. Definitely would recommend. As for the trip, definitely wear hiking boots, I wore converse and it was a bit more difficult to hike up there. It can also get a bit chilly and weather definitely changes fast, from sunny to cloudy and potentially rainy, so definitely be prepared for that.

We had originally ordered the 5-day trip "Maramures, Bucovina & Danube Delta". Due to changes in flight times, we had to rebook the trip to a personal 4-day trip. We were in Sinaia, Bran, Brașov, Tulcea and Constanța. Despite the problem with the airline, it was no problem for Travelmaker to make changes and adapt the trip to the new conditions. Which we are very happy about. Travelmaker was very accommodating. We had a guide named Daniel during the trip, and Daniel was both nice and very knowledgeable. Which will make the whole trip to a magnificent trip. If you like nature, this was the perfect trip, even if we probably missed out on other experiences that the original 5-day trip would provide. I can highly recommend this trip and Travelmaker.

We had already seen some of Transylvania with Valentin on another holiday, and that experience convinced us to do a much longer tour with him. He has a deep understanding of the history of his country, of which he us justifiably proud, and doesn't shy away from talking about some of the more difficult periods in its history. His explanations really help you to appreciate the culture of the country. This time we went on a 9-day custom tour around Romania, from Bucharest to Costanţa on the Black Sea, a boat tour to see the wildlife of the Danube Delta, the amazing painted churches of Bucovina, the old steam train into the mountains at Viseu de Sus, the memorial to victims of communism in Sighet, traditional wooden architecture and crafts at Sapanta, the old town in Sibiu, Timişoara, the fortress at Alba Iulia, the amazing castle at Hunedoara. Orşova for another boat trip on the Danube, stunning sculptures by Brȃncuşi at Tȃrgu Jiu, and finally back to Bucharest. There was a lot more in this tour than I’ve listed here: Valentin filled every minute with interesting things that weren’t in our itinerary and also left us to explore on our own in the evenings. His choice of restaurants and accomodation was excellent and suited our budget. There was quite a lot of driving in our itinerary, and Valentin is a master at negotiating the roads and traffic — which included horse-drawn wagons! Valentin made our experience of Romania into a holiday which we will never forget. We were very fortunate to have the company of his wife as well, and we are hoping to get back to see them again on another Romanian adventure. Thank you Valentin and Cristina! We were so lucky!
