Edward James sculptor garden, Las Pozas

The sculpture park Las Pozas, located in Xilitla, San Luis Potosí, was created by Edward James, an eccentric English poet and artist, also a great patron of the Surrealist movement. Nestled in the Huasteca Potosina, Edward James found the perfect setting to create the work of his life. Between natural and artificial pools and Waterfalls that prepare the mind to enter into a dreamy world, a surrealistic labyrinth unfolds. Buildings that evoke nonsense, doors that open up to nothing, stairs that lead to the sky, and concrete flowers that grow at the same time as the natural ones. The design of Las Pozas is inspired both in orchids and the greenery of the Huasteca Potosina, it combines ideas and concepts taken from the Surrealist movement in which Edward James was immersed. A Shangri-la, a fusion between organic and artificial things, between the jungle and concrete, thus managing to merge two worlds in just one. The origin of Las Pozas goes back to 1947, when Edward James (who lived in some kind of exile in the United States), purchased a coffee plantation near Xilitla, San Luis Potosí, and registered it in the name of Plutarco Gastelum, his close friend, together they created Las Pozas. During the first years, Edward James kept the Las Pozas as a display of his fabulous orchid collection, and as home for his many exotic pets. In 1962, after an unprecedented frost that destroyed a huge part of Edward James' plantation, he concentrated on constructing the sculptural garden we know today. The sculptural set of Xilitla is located inside a piece of land situated in a place called La Conchita, township of Xilitla, San Luis Potosí. It takes up an area of almost nine hectares. Between 1964 and 1967, the renowned painter, Leonora Carrington, visited the park, leaving an al fresco painted mural in El Castillo, Plutarco Gastelum's house, also Edward James' home during his visits. The image of the painting corresponds to a figure with human feminine traits and a zoomorph head. In 2007, the Fundación Pedro y Elena Hernández, A.C, acquired Las Pozas with the purpose of preserving the sculptures and protecting the flora of its surroundings. The Fundación Pedro y Elena Hernández, A. C., besides being in charge of receiving more than 80 thousand visitors each year, also works on: - The preservation and restoration of the structure - The preservation and restoration of the garden - The preservation and restoration of the areas of woods that belong to the property

To try to describe this hauntingly beautiful place is almost impossible. Edward James was probably a genius. His creation is unique. Just GOOGLE this garden in Wikipedia and be prepared to marvel. Thank goodness the Xlitla Foundation now controls and manages this magical cultural statement- almost set out of time and in a parallel universe- a place in the jungle alive with the flash of brilliant parrots, the tumble of the waters (Las Pozas) down the hillside and the surrealistic structures and sculptures created by James. Stay in the hotel which was his shared home- a wondrous kind of Gothic extravaganza. Walk the site and marvel at its strangeness and other worldness.

Embarcadero La Morena

Reviewed By alikarim - Frisco, texas

Cascades de Tamul; which is a waterfall that you have to paddle to from a small village called La Morena, about 20-30 kms north of Aquisimon. Here, for between 400 (shared) and 600 pesos (alone); the guide will take you in his canoe (4km) paddling to the magnificent water falls. The water of the river is turquoise in color (from limestone and minerals in the water), and there are many natural Waterfalls along the way. There are a lot of natural Springs along the way, where water gushes out of the ground. Clean, clear and fresh water.
The Waterfalls are worth the view, and you can jump/swim off a large boulder "island" near the foot of the falls. You cannot get close to the falls by river because of the rapids. On the way back, you can swim or canoe back. Midway, there is a stop at a large cavern which is a natural swimming hole.
Be sure to take watersocks with you if you plan to spend time in the water. The canoe operator will provide paddles and life jackets.

Experiencia Huasteca

Reviewed By PeterLemass - San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala

We did a day tour with Isabel and Sophia from Experiencia Huasteca which took in the Tamul waterfall and later on the cave of swallows and it was excellent fun and great value! They made sure we had a great time and that we were never short of snacks, stopping for local cinnamon bread and homemade ice-cream among others.
We set off at 9am and passed through a cute village on the way and saw a small craft market where snacks were also available if you hadn't had breakfast already.
We arrived at the river where you get a boat together and paddle up towards the waterfall which is about 1 hour. We stopped off at a cave where you can swim then continued nearer the waterfall. You have to stop at a rock a few hundred meters from it but it is spectacular.
There is the option to float down certain stretches of the river on the way back wearing life vests Which is great fun.
After the waterfall we went for lunch at the house of our boat captain which was tasty and reasonably priced. After lunch we drove for a few more hours to the Cave of Swallows. It's a 30 minute walk to get down to the waiting area for the birds to come back to their roosts in the cave. As the sun sinks they all (aparrently all 2million) come swooshing down in droves which is very impressive to see and hear.
Then we headed back to Xilitla stopping off at the best homemade ice-cream place on the way, arriving back at about 730pm. Muchas Gracias Sophia y Isabel por la experiencia Bonita :-)
One tip, bring one of those waterproof plastic covers for your phone. They also sell them at the boat captain's house where you stop before the waterfall.
Other boats will try to splash water at you so be careful if you have an expensive camera or don't like being splashed!

Cascada Los Comales

The waterfall is impressive and beautiful, while you walk towards it you can increasingly hear the force of the water against the rocks. It may not be one of the best in la Huasteca since the pool underneath is very shallow, it's pretty much impossible to swim there. But if you go down through the water, there are other spots where people don't go and you can chill for a while.
