This beautiful fishing village is a Nicaraguan gem, a magnet for surfers and sunbathers. At night, the beach still pulses with activity, thanks to a few popular beachfront bars and nightclubs. Surf clubs abound—catch a wave with an expert instructor if you’re a hang-ten rookie, trying to hang with the surfer big boys.

I walked from our lodging, Casa Andalucia, down to the beach, forded the river at the mouth, went along the beach and then took the next road up for one block, and then turned left. From there the route is well-signed. It took about 45 minutes from our hostel. It cost $1 to enter. I arrived just before 5 p.m. and stayed until after sunset. I was the last one there. Great for photos! Although it is very windy. By the time I walked down it was quite dark, but he walk back along the beach was beautiful.

Yahaira, runs an amazing operation.
The teachers, activities and the home stay all ran super smooth. Actually my favorite part of my 3 week vacation was staying and knowing Lucilia from my home stay. She was so sincere and kind. With the one on one lessons and being forced to only speak in spanish you will improve your skills rapidly.
The school was professionally operated but they still made you feel like Family!!!
Thanks Spanish Ya
and special thanks to Yahaira, Claudia, and Lucilia!!

Very interesting to see hundreds of turtles coming onto the beach to lay eggs. No white light allowed. Bring a red lens flash light or headlamp. Unfortunately some people wanted a photo so they used their white flash. This is unfortunate and harms the turtles. Be careful where you step and where you walk since the turtles are everywhere. Don’t forget to look up at the night sky since the stars are spectacular at this Latitude. Tour company charges $25 for transportation, ride out took about 45 minutes with part of the road being unpacked.

Arrived to this school with very limited Spanish knowledge. My teacher was Vanessa, and she was amazing! She was extremely professional, but she had a wonderful sense of humour, as all of the teachers at this school had. A very comfortable school setting with one on one instruction, located in the centre of the town, with wifi. I studied here 4 hrs a day for 6 days, and the time passed far to quickly. A plan for my week was made at the start, and reviewed each day. I was in Nicaragua for a dental brigade in the northern part of the country, and Vanessa made sure I had the correct terminology for the patients I would be interacting with. I was invited to join the teachers for a cultural dance presentation, salsa dancing , and Spanish Karaoke. I had a wonderful time with them outside of the class room, as I did in class!
I stayed with a beautiful Nicaraguan family, that were very considerate of me, and my needs. The house was on the main drag of SJD, a little noisy with traffic, vehicles, roasters, and Barking dogs, but that is the experience of living with a host family, and having the cultural experience. Each evening I was encouraged to talk with the family, and was served outstanding meals. I was given homework at the end of each class, which was a great review, and prepared me for the following day. I can't say enough about this school, the teachers, and my home stay! I would highly recommend LASS to anyone looking for a spanish school in San Juan del Sur! I hope to visit again Hasta Pronto!

So I have no idea what this place looks like during spring break but at the time that I was there in mid February it was sparsely populated. The weather was great Sunny warm Breezy ordering on Windy at some point. However there was plenty of room to walk up and down the beach or lay out without interfering with anybody else. The water was cold I'll be honest I didn't go all the way in just waited around a little bit but it was exactly what I was looking for. The town seems quite safe I walked around solo until about midnight and didn't have any problems. I would definitely recommend checking out the speech it was the highlight of my trip.
