Jagannath Temple

Reviewed By 2105bimal - Chandigarh, India

Nothing can describe the ultimate pilgrimage of Hindu religion. The seat of Lord Jagannath, literally the king of the world. From the vast temple complex, to the intricate carvings on the walls of the structure,to the flag which always flies in the opposite direction of the wind to the sanctum sanctorum where only the privileged see the Lord and his siblings is a very humbling experience. The kitchen is huge and cooking is done for approximately 50000 people daily by an army of cooks in only earthen vessels on a wood fire and water drawn from wells within the complex. This temple along with Konark should be on top of the bucket list when visiting Odisha, India.

Reviewed By himalayan_son - New Delhi, India

Hello People. Odisha is full many beautiful destinations and Chilika Lake is one of them. It is a brackish water lagoon, spread over the Large area of Khurda and Ganjam districts of Odisha state on the east coast of India, at the mouth of the Daya River, flowing into the Bay of Bengal, towards east cost. It is the largest coastal lagoon in India and the second largest brackish water lagoon in the world. Just to add It has been listed as a tentative UNESCO World Heritage site. The lake offers a beautiful flamboyant display of a myriad of avian charms in all diverse hues and colours, ranging from the white-bellied sea eagles to flamingos, and from golden plovers to sandpiper. Also, if you will be lucky enough the lake also boasts of being one of the only two sites in the world where the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins can be spotted. The Chilika lake is around 50 kms from Puri and 110 kms from Bhubaneshwar. This place is well connected by all means of transport. You can also do boating ( for around 2-3 hours) around the lake, also you will meet locals who are expert in selling gemstones, which are used to found under coral reefs and many other sea products. The place is having many hotels and lodges at reasonable prices. The lake is so beautiful and the experience is really good. If you’re going to Odisha, do visit this place.

Puri Beach

Reviewed By malaya2015 - Melbourne, Australia

Puri Beach -- located near Swargdwar/Marine drive road, this is quite a popular place to visit (or to stay in nearby hotels). Puri is approximately 60 km from Bhubaneswar Airport. Unless you travel during off-season, this place can be overcrowded & nearby hotels fully booked out. But apart from this, it's an interesting place for a break and has a lot to offer. This place is a heaven for Sea food lovers. There are many Restaurants in Swargadwar locality that specialise in Fish-dishes such as Parse, Ilish, Pomfret and many more varities of fresh Fish availed from the daily catch. Swargadwar is also a good place for buying tradional dress, Saris, handicrafts (especially the ones made from Conch Shells) etc. In the evening, after sunset, the beach side offers a relaxing atmosphere. While in Puri, a visit to Jagannath Temple (also Gndicha Temple etc) is a must, if you want to please the God. But without availing the services of a Panda, you wont have a hope of attaining even a Darshan of Lord Jagannath during Busy/rush-hours. Even with the Assistance of a Strong Panda my family & I found that it was akin to playing the Game of Kabaddi inside the Temple! It was quite an experience, an overwhelming one at that, for the kids and my Mrs but we managed to get Jagannath Baba's Holy Darshan & Blessings after all. Just outside the Temple, there are many Sweet Shops that sell tasty Samosas, Rosogollas & variety of savouries etc. From Puri there are many day-tours available for other nearby attractions like Konark Sun temple, Chilka Lake and so on. Puri also has a Hindu Cremation ground, which can be a bit overwhelming for some at first, but it's all part of life once in Puri. Malay Adhikari (Melbourne, Australia)
