Tabu Sushi - Del Mar

W Live in the neighborhood so we decided to try this restaurant on a Groupon. Our initial disappointment came when we realized all the crab used in the Sushi was krab, I.e. Imitation crabmeat. After looking over the menu, we de decided to try a variety of dishes, shrimp tempura, teriyaki salmon bowl and rainbow roll sushi. While fresh, nothing was particularly well seasoned. The waiter did as little as he could to get by. Sorry, but there are too many better restaurants. We won't be back.

Colleagues and I enjoyed a nice meal at Shimbashi Izakaya. As some were not hard core sushi/shashimi eaters, this was a good choice. The menu offered a variety of Japanese sushi options, but also some non traditional alternatives. There was a menu with pictures to aid your choices as is common in Japan. Everyone’s meal was very good and so was our service. We ate outside and our view of the pacific was quite nice too. Prices were somewhat high as can be expected with this cuisine in the USA matched with Del Mar. Sake options were numerous, but that too was expensive. I would recommend Shimbashi Izakaya to anyone who enjoys Japanese cuisine with a view, but be prepared to pay for it.

We tried a couple of the restaurant's most popular rolls, including the Monkey Roll, all of which were pretty good. The challenge in SoCal is there are so many great sushi restaurants making it difficult to stand out but we thought the sushi was above average. Unfortunately the weak service took a little away from the culinary experience. Our water glasses had lipstick on it when delivered and when the waitress exchanged them she just treated the event as nothing had happened which could have been handled a bit better. Overall would recommend the place for the food which was pretty good.

Our ramen was heavily treated with monosodium glutamate (MSG). If a restaurant succumbs to that it probably does not have any ambition whatsoever.

The restaurant is always busy with good, reliable food. The bar has a great atmosphere with friendly, attentive service and great happy hour prices (until 6.30 many days). Eric and his team make everyone feel welcome - regulars and newcomers alike. I believe happy hour is all evening on Monday. Easy parking and close to the 5. A real find!

Classic California restaurant full of entitled millennials to serve you. Arrived in the valet lot only to find and I’m noxious attendant that “welcomed us“ to the restaurant. We came to go to the upstairs bar but that was not open on a Saturday afternoon. We were Crammed into the dark, cold downstairs area as they probably didn’t have enough employees to work the full restaurant… Here’s the good news the ice was cold and so was the beer. We ordered a roll that had questionable texture on the raw fish. Not very flavorful… Deciding not to order additional items seem to irritate the waiter. Upon our decision to leave the valet attendant helped three different patrons that were behind us in line before they helped us. It then took over 15 minutes to bring my vehicle from some lot elsewhere. As a parting gift the valet obnoxiously asked for a tip. Overrated and entitled when there are many other places to go.
