We tried the Charming creek walkway as a short walkway not so far away from Westport. The trail follows an old railway track for the timber business in the last century. Some of the railway equipment is still there. But the most beautiful award for hiking for one and a half hour one way is the waterfall after walking through a long tunnel carved out of the mountain by loggers a hundred years ago. Flashlight recommeded.

This loop walk takes in amazing sites, the Mirror Tarn (lake) and the Moira Gate Arch. Be sure to go into the Arch if you have sturdy shoes and ok to go down and back up with chain rail

Easy flat walk to the tarn from the Mirror Tarn carpark where we were rewarded with beautiful reflections and were particularly pleased to have black robins sit almost at our feet twice on the path back as well as a quick visit from a tomtit.

Oparara Basin Walking Tracks

We went up with the Oparara guided tour which I’ve commented on separately. The road up is bumpy and I wouldn’t suggest going up in a non SUV vehicle especially not on wet weather. The track to the arches is really easy walking due to a recent upgrade. We saw a pair of whio ducks too. For the best views when you get the the gate go down the bank to the river bed. Really nice flush toilets and picnic spot at the public car park.

Big Rimu Tree

Reviewed By MagicRoundabout365 - Queenstown, New Zealand

Loved the Big Tree Walk, we would highly recommend, loved that the trees just got larger and larger as we went along the bush track until we reached the largest - well signposted from the road - tip: walk towards what looks like a bus stop shelter then the walk starts there - not sure why it says its ok for disabled people as we thought it would have been unsuitable - its a loop track - there is a big car parking area with toilets. If you stop at the camping ground; like we did which is just a little further along the road then there is a walking track from there (track starts by the little huts that they rent out, across a bit of a meadow then when you get to the sign boards where it forks then go up the right hand side track - this track was closed when we went which was Dec 2020 but may have opened since) when you get to the road its more or less opposite to the left but look for the bus shelter or you may be looking for the entrance a while....
