One of the world’s fashion capitals, Milan offers endless opportunities for chic shopping. Hit the artsy neighborhood of Brera for leather goods and Via Monte Napoleone for exclusive, expensive boutiques. The enchanting mosaics and glass vaults of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II make shoppers feel like they’re wandering inside a painting. Take break from your spree to gape at the iconic Duomo, then grab tickets to a performance at La Scala. Post-opera, the Navigli district pulses with late-night activity.

Visiting the Shoah Memorial in Milan is a very moving experience. Partly because I found the last name of one of my co-workers, whose Jewish heritage father had fled fascist Milan in the 1930's (was is a relative?). This site is unique b/c most WWII sites in Europe focus on heroism and the terrible finality; whereas the Shoah Memorial gives a vivid sense of how terrifying the deportation journey must have been, starting with the horrible uprooting from home to the central rail station at nighttime with no idea of where anyone was going. The rail cars were designed for animals (6 horses) and actually carried 75+ human beings for a week in the winter. The dark industrial decor emphasizes the horror. I disagree with the prior reviewer about the lack of English legends (the site is in Italy after all). And the the docent-led visit is very well done & highly recommended. This visit is somewhat a sad event, but regardless I can recommend it to anyone interested in this aspect of history.
