The city itself (the parish Esposende, Marinhas e Gandra) had a population of 9,197 in 2001. It gained city status on 2 July 1993. The present Mayor is Fernando Couto Cepa, elected by the Social Democratic Party. The municipal holiday is August 19. It is located on the Portuguese Way of the Camino de Santiago.

We stayed at the Hotel Suave Mar on half board while walking the Camino, which may have contributed to the service but should not have. They had 6 wait staff for about 25-30 people. We did not receive bread on the table until we requested it twice and only after we were part way through our soup course (which was fine). When we ordered our meal, we also ordered a bottle of sparkling mineral water which did not arrive until after we had partially completed our main course and, once again, only after asking for it twice. The pasta was slightly overcooked and the bolognese was very course and had clearly not been braised sufficiently. I could detect little of the vegetable sofrito in the tomato based sauce. The accompanying Parmesan cheese was not freshly ground but rather appeared to be granulated from a jar. The creme caramel for dessert was fine. When we tried to pay for the drinks (that were in addition to the half board) no one seemed to want to pick up the bill and provide change. Eventually a couple I knew in the dining room made change as I was loathe to leave a large tip. In over 150 restaurant reviews in over 20 countries this is one of less than 10 - 2* reviews.

This restaurant was a pleasant surprise. Every effort is made to make the customer feel he is in a real Italian bistro. Service was fast and congenial. The pizza was excellent as were the raviolis with 4 cheese sauce. The owner and pizzaiolo got second place in the best pizza in Portugal contest and even participated in Padova, Italy with the best in Europe. For top quality Italian food with quick and smiling service this restaurant is highly recommended.CarÃssimo cliente, ficámos orgulhosos e agradecidos pelo seu comentário, é por estes motivo que realmente tentamos atender da melhora forma os cliente! Apostámos na relação: qualidade/ preço, para obter os melhores resultados!
