Salt River Canyon Scenic Drive

Reviewed By Kahnster - Pinetop-Lakeside, United States

So, I would not characterize the Salt River Canyon as a destination as much as a point between Phoenix and the White Mountains. However, it is really something to experience! The canyon bottom rest stop has some great views of the Salt River and you can go right down to the water. The river is the boundary between the San Carlos Apache Reservation and the White Mountain Apache Reservation. If you want to fish the river (caught some nice cats and bass there) you nee a reservation fishing license. (closest place to buy is probably in San Carlos or Carrizo Junction, not close by!) Great picture opportunities and for the brave and adventurous, (4x4 part of the way) drive the dirt road from the bridge west along the river to the salt flats or all the way to Roosevelt Lake. (wow!) Otherwise, stop at the bottom for the view. The closest food and gas is about 45 minutes south at Globe or 1 hour north at Carrizo Junction.

Fun place trading post, well worth the stop. A good selection of souvenirs, a bit over priced (assuming priced for Phoenix visitors).

this park seems to be under-rated or unknown by most travelers, especially since it is free -- It is perfect for anyone wanting to get a quick look at what a mine is or does and maybe take an easy hike or two. They have an excellent little collection of mine "artifacts" and the kids loved the playground (it was mine themed) --- will visit again if in the area
