We found Trieste's Grand Canal to be far from big. It is fairly narrow and only about 650 feet long, but it makes a large contribution to an extremely pretty area of the city. Small motor boats are moored by both banks; and bars, cafes and squares flank the clear water. We enjoyed wonderful views of the canal from the Ponte Rosso, a short span that has been around in one form or another since 1756. This small bridge holds a bronze statue of writer James Joyce on its North side. Life-size, the work accurately captures his likeness, based on the photos I have seen. He lived on and off in Trieste for 11 years and wrote chapters of his famous "Ulysses" here. Ponte Rosso also offers lovely photo ops of the canal and its immediate area, including Chiesa di Sant'Antonio on the canal's Western end. The Grand Canal -- the city's only canal -- came into existence as part of a project to enlarge channels to the sea, thus allowing ships easy access to various warehouses for loading and unloading. No other canals were completed, and this one can no longer accommodate ships. Easy to find, the canal runs East/West in the city center near the main square.
