The Lory Theater

Reviewed By mhaller28 - Pocahontas, Illinois

Remember the bygone days of the old vaudeville? The Lory Theater brings them back-sort of. They theme their employees around the movie-for instance, Beauty and the Beast that was recently released in March, one of their employees dressed as Belle and posed for photo ops with kids (and adults). Belle also sang a recreated version of the theme song Beauty and the Beast to inform those who had not turned off their phones that they would be kicked out-would've have loved to have recorded it, but I wanted to watch the movie. They have a very strict rule of no phones, so be prepared to just shut it down and just watch the movie without worrying about facebook, texts, etc. because you will be removed from the movie.
The owners have done a fantastic job of renovating this old theater and having fun with their employees and audience. If you are wanting to catch a movie-this is the place. Order some popcorn, a nice fountain Ski (they carry only Excel Bottling products) and get comfy for your show!

Plaza Square

Reviewed By CTS2003 - Saint Louis, Missouri

Plaza Square features a cool water fountain in a well maintained park in the heart of Highland. Also known as “The Square” by locals, getting there is not a hassle; it doesn’t have a specific address that I know of, but The Square does consist of a whole block in the middle of downtown. There is parking on all four sides of The Square, the parking is all free, and it’s easy to get your car in and out of the parking spaces.

The highlight of Plaza Square is unquestionably the water fountain. It’s a large size fountain with variable water streams. I found it was fun to sit on one of the benches surrounding the fountain and just watch it for a while. The fountain looks most impressive at night though, as it has synchronized & colored lighting to match what the fountain is doing. The fountain doesn’t run in winter, but you should be able to see it any other time during the year. If watching the fountain makes you thirsty, there are even public water fountains you can drink from on the sidewalk surrounding the fountain!

The Square also features a small amphitheater. I saw an advertisement for a free outdoor concert series held there on Friday nights during the summer of 2013. There is also a set of tall flagpoles on the south side of the park. Highland is proud of its Swiss heritage, and you can get a good picture of the city’s flag that features both the Swiss flag crest and an American Shield design. Unique stuff!

From what I can tell there are currently very few tourists who visit The Square; it’s mostly just locals. That said, it is a very visitor friendly location, as I visited during lunch on a weekday when the weather was ideal, and it was hardly crowded at all. You’re also within walking distance of several restaurants and shops, another plus to this location. Prior to your visit, check ahead to see if there are any festivals or street fairs going on so as to avoid any surprises if the streets around The Square are blocked off.

Plaza Square is a neat and unique park with a very awesome water fountain, that is just a nice place to hang out for a while. If you’re in the area, it’s worth a stop. I plan to make many repeat visits to The Square myself!

Floyd's

Reviewed By Grace L - Greencastle, Indiana

A friend and I showed up to Floyd's in the middle of the afternoon, not knowing what it was. We pulled up to a large barren wall and a sad sign with the word "Floyd" on it with flashing lights. Turns out Floyd's is a bar; hoping we could get a bite to eat we went inside. We were not greeted, though the bartender made cold eye contact with us, and when we asked to see a menu were instructed to go somewhere across the street to eat. One in the afternoon just felt a little early for drinks. Anyway, you should probably be a regular customer if you want to hang out at Floyd's. Even a love of video games which coincides with their video games sign probably won't get you far at this establishment.
