We made the very long drive from Medora ND and while the Tower is amazing it wouldn't take 30 minutes without the trail. You will see several different opinions as whether it is easy or moderate - that depends on how in shape you are. There are quite a bit of inclines, felt like more up than down. We didn't need hiking boots but good tennis shoes are more appropriate than sandals. It is a very interesting walk with climbers making it more interesting. I can't imagine making even a short drive to get here and not taking this trail.

This is an iconic geologic feature of the High Plaines, made even more famous from the movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” with actor Richard Dreyfuss. I was able to incorporate the music with a Facebook post. It is truly memorizing when you first see the real Devils Tower.
Only about 400,000 people make the sojourn to visit this National Monument every year. Devils Tower was the first National Monument designated as such by then President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906.
About 4000 of those people actually climb to the top of the 867 foot tower. We were there on August 21st, 2017 when the eclipse occurred. We saw a number of people climbing down after the event. We give these people "high marks."
Taking the 1.3 trail around the Tower is a recommended “must do” activity. The trail is fairly flat and the views are majestic.
We found the visitor’s center to be interesting and informative. There is quite a bit of folklore associated with the Tower. For thousands of years this was a sacred place for various tribes of Native American Indians.
One of the top theories of the Towers formation was due to the intrusion of igneous rock through sedimentary layers of rock. Devils Tower is considered to be a “laccolithic butte.”
On our visit, Park Rangers handed out protective glasses to view the 98% solar eclipse. It was quite an experience to view the eclipse with Devils Tower as the major landmark.

The visitor center at Devil's Tower is quite small but has good information about the geology of the tower and the history of it becoming the first National Monument. Good overview of the Native American legends of it's creation according different tribes. The gift store is also small but has a good selection of books for children and adults. Small parking lot, restrooms, picnic tables, drinking water. Trails start near the parking lot and are pretty well marked.

The "Trading Post" is conveniently located right outside the entrance to the park. There were some longhorn cattle and buffalo in the fields to the shop. This is your typical souvenir shop which is what we expected. It is rustic on the outside and very clean and well kept inside. It is a little cramped as they have a lot of "stuff". The souvenirs are typical knick knacks, t-shirts, and food which are probably over priced. We did end up buying a few stickers and food. The food was standard hot dogs and burgers but it fit our needs as we were under a little time constraint.

This beautiful sculpture is set just a little ways off of the main road up to the tower and can be easily overlooked. The sculpture is one of a series that have been created for sacred spots around the world by a modern Japanese sculptor. It is set to frame and enhance a view of the tower - a spot very sacred to Native Americans. Be sure to take a brief detour between the prairie dog colony and the campground to see this and grab some pictures.
