I've been coming to this particular beach since I was in the womb. Through the years it has changed. I must say the sherbet colored houses and the people cruising up and down the road are a nice change. I've always loved the laid back friendliness of island life and Crystal revels in it. The water is gumbo 90% of the time but on the rare occasions that the green or the blue comes, it is a welcome event.

Fort Travis has a long history of defense and fortifications dating back to the early 1800's. The current defense and canon structures were built in 1899. They were active as late as WWII with over 2,500 troops and anti-aircraft guns. After the war everything was dismantled. Some of the cement structures still exist, but they are fenced off. In 1976 this whole area began operating as a park.
There really is not much to see here. I've tried tent camping, but the wind off the gulf makes it impossible to camp there. The bath and shower facilities are not very clean. The park itself is flat barren grass with nothing to protect you from the sun and wind. There is a small play area for kids.
There are three main uses for this park. It's a great bird watching area. There is a marsh on the backside of the park. There are viewing blinds where you can look through birds down below. The wide open flat grass makes a nice place for plovers. A second use is fishing, but I rarely see people fishing when I stop by. A third use would be ocean gazing. You can sit on the seawall and watch the waves, ships and gulls.
I would never really come to this park other than to see birds. There is nothing to do and you're very exposed to the sun and wind.

My son and I, plus my 87 year old dad and 85 year old mom went sky diving on September 15, 2017. These guys were so professional and were excellent with my parents. Their experience and dedication to their job is outstanding. Will do this again.

When my friend asked me to skydive with her I was like "heck yeah, let's do it!" but I had no idea how much fun this was actually going to be. The crew at Blue Skies are super professional, explain everything, help to calm any nerves you may have, and make it such a blast! Since I love the water so much I knew that jumping over the beach was going to be awesome! The plane ride up was beautiful, and free-falling and gliding under the canopy...twisting and turning over the water was breathtaking. Thanks to Alex, my instructor, as he was freakin' awesome!!!! We had so much fun! Phil and Omar jumped with my friends and they had fun too. The whole crew was awesome (special shout out to the one packing my 'chute... thanks!!!!!)
Don't think about it.....JUST DO IT!!!! You will love it!!!!!
