The town is very interesting with some classical spanish style balconies and a traditional central plaza in front of the Basilica. The Basilica is a beautiful, very sacred place which is visited by many pilgrims as is the well where our Lady appeared. There is also another church siuated on a high spot in the town. There are a few good quality restaurants in the plaza. Well wortth a visit even if you are not a Catholic.

Iglesia de San Agustin

Reviewed By polka party - Bogota, Colombia

The old cloister and church of San Agustin has been successfully converted into a branch of the central bank’s library system. Several frescos of St. Augustine’s life are preserved in the upper levels. The cloister and church has had secular uses for 150 years so there are very few original details left in the old sanctuary. These monasteries can get pretty dark so the renovation architects cut through the ancient walls in several places to allow for more natural light to enter. Some will like it; traditionalists may not. The building is open to the public, but you will need to store your belongings in a locker (for a minimal fee). Photos are only allowed in the cloister.
