McCollum Chidester House

Since both my brother and I are American History buffs, we knew that we had to visit the McCollum Chidester House while in Camden, Arkansas.

We had a wonderful and knowledgeable guide from the Ouachita County Historical Society who gave us insight into the McCollum-Chidester House and its history. Since it was a very fine house for its time, we were not too surprised to learn that during the Civil War, the house was used as headquarters at various times by Confederate General Sterling Price and Union General Frederick Steele during the Battle of Poison Springs, Arkansas in the spring of 1864.

As a film buff, I also found it interesting to learn that a scene from the 1985 TV Miniseries, North and South, starring Patrick Swayze and based on the John Jakes trilogy was filmed in the parlor of the house.

Admission to the McCollum-Chidester house which is purchased next door at the Ouachita County Historical Society is $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for students. It is suggested that you call ahead to the Historical Society if your group has 10 or more in the tour. .

The house is open for tours from Wednesday - Saturday from 9 am - 4 pm. and is closed for major holidays.

The house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in June 1975,

Poison Spring State Park

Nothing to do here but look at a small civil war display and walk through the woods. Overall it's a nice clean park, but we usually just stop here as 'one last thing to do' before driving home from White Oak Lake

A must see if interested in Red River Campaign of the Civil War! In this grand southern antebellum home was established a hospital for both the North and South depending which side held the town of Camden. See the slave produced bricks on the back patrol. For a tour please be in contact with Dr. Fred Dietrich in Camden.

I enjoyed visiting this park. The part of town it is in could be a bit sketchy, but it was worth the 15 minutes it took to hike to the top of the hill and read the marker. Check out the pictures I have posted, they show the park.

Ouachita Trail

We biked the LOVT trail. It was well maintained and fun for me. They are rated strenuous at times. I was unsure what that meant and my explanation would be steep climbs and fun rolling hills we biked 36miles and around 1150 feet elevation climbs recorded. I do not like technical with large rocks and this trail was a blast and great workout with out technical rocks. More then a beginning level with roots and climbs. Absolutely loved rolling over the pines. My boyfriend is skilled rider and enjoyed these trails as much as I did. Something for everyone and beautiful.
