Fantastic place to see several impressive bonsai trees in a safe outdoor environment and to learn about the important (and often neglected) history of the Japanese Americans from the local area who were forced to leave behind their homes and businesses as they were locked up in internment camps miles away during WWII.

Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden

The Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden, located between Seattle and Tacoma, is a 22-acre woodland garden featuring the largest collection of Rhododendron species in the world. With a Victorian stumpery, the Rutherford conservatory, a pond garden, extensive fern collection, rock garden, and a blue poppy meadow, visitors will experience a diverse collection of plants in a Pacific Northwest forest setting. The garden is also home to beautiful companion plants, including the famous Himalayan Blue Poppies, Camellias, Magnolias, Japanese maples, and many rare plants. Many of the plants found growing in the Garden are for sale in the Nursery or through our on-line catalog. RSBG is dedicated to the conservation, research, acquisition, evaluation, cultivation, public display, and distribution of Rhododendron species.

The garden is beautiful, hands down. It's deceptively large, given how crammed together it appears on first entrance. The entrance fee of $8 a person is maybe a tad steep for a garden, so if you're on a tight budget and this is a secondary spot on your list, it might be worth going to a different, free garden. However, if you're interested in this garden specifically, or rhododendrons more broadly, the price tag is worth it. The parking lot is a short walk away, so be prepared for that.

Dash Point State Park

This is a fantastic park all around. My fiance and I enjoyed the trail system, which comes out to be several miles long. They're not intensely grueling trails, but they aren't flat fields, either. If you're looking for a park with a good beach or good trails without leaving the city area much, this is one of the best.
