Adi Kumbeswarar Temple

Kumbakonam is known as the city of temples and this temple is one of the main highlights of the temple town of Kumbakonam. A majestic Shiva temple situated in the heart of the city. The temple is huge and very well maintained. The highlight of our visit was the elephant blessing the devotees near the temple entrance. What an intelligent being! If a parent went with a child for the blessing, he blessed the child first. Happy to see such traditions still being maintained.

Arulmigu Naganathaswamy Temple Thirunageswaram

I visited this temple together with my family in August 2018. I am surprised that not much has been written or shared about this temple on TripAdvisor. I feel blessed to have visited this temple and would like to share my experience. The main presiding deity in this temple is Lord Shiva. This temple is revered to be one of the 9 important navagraha (planets) temples in India, dedicated to Lord Rahu (North Lunar Node). Lord Rahu is believed to be relieved from his curse at this temple where he prayed to Lord Shiva. Therefore, Lord Rahu relieves his devotees from Rahu Dosha and shower them with his blessings at this place. Highlights of the temple as mentioned by the priest are stated below. 1) Milk poured on Lord Rahu's idol as abhishekham, turns blue in colour. The priest explained that since Lord Rahu is a snake, the milk turns blue upon contact with the idol indicating the presence of poison. This affirms that the deity is very much alive. However, abishekham is only done on special occasions. 2) Goddess Girigujambal, a swayambu lingam that radiates heat waves. Goddess Girigujambal performed a penance at this temple to relieve herself from a curse and reunite with Lord Shiva. The temple priest also shared that Goddesses Lakshmi and Saraswathi (seen at the sides of goddess Girigujambal) are believed to be still pacifying her. If not for the two other goddesses, the heat experienced at the shrine would be more intense. My family and I experienced the heat waves personally and no words can describe this divine experience. This temple is a must visit for all Hindu devotees. Do not miss it!

Thanjavur Royal Palace and Art Gallery

The former palace is a massive neglected compound with towers and courtyards. The Art Gallery houses an impressive collection of bronze and stone statues.

One of the must visit place, if you’re visiting Thanjavur. Palace is an historic place which has countless artefacts and statues which are a sight to behold. Let me tell you that this place cannot be covered in a single day, if you’re planning to visit all of them. This place houses few museums. One of them is controlled by the Govt of Tamilnadu & otter museums by the Royal Family. There is a huge library as well. You will be amazed by the magnitude of the construction and the way each and every portion is designed. It is better to check the opening hours before you could make the visit. This place is in the centre of the city & is surrounded by various establishments. It has ample parking facility too. I was amazed to see the beauty of Statues apart from the artefacts, old coins to name a few. Highly recommended.
