Chateau Filhot

The Château FILHOT was fonded in 1709 by Romain de FILHOT and is now owned and managed by one of his descendants: count Henri de Vaucelles. The estate covers an area of 350 hectares with 62 hectares of vineyard all along the south of the Sauternes village in the Sauternes appellation. The vineyar of château Filhot are planted with 60 % of Sémillon, 36 % of Sauvignon and 4 % of Muscadelle. The hillsides face towards the south or the south-west and consist of gravels, clay and sand on calcareous base. They are bordered by the Landes forest and are crossed by Ciron (small local river) which creates the ideal microclimate for the development of the botrytis cinerea on the grapes. The harvest is made with successive selections according to the state of maturation of the grapes and the evolution of the noble rot (botrytis cinerea).

Chateau Guiraud

We booked a tour with the winery and were a bit late, but they were able to accommodate us, even though we missed the first part of the tour. Then we were joined by the rest of the group and continued with the tour, followed by amazing tasting with some food pairing. Even though we are familiar with Sauternes wine and are big fans of it, we still learned a few new things about it and tasting did push my limits on blue cheese - I'm not a big fan of it, but I could not NOT do this pairing when in Sauternes. And that tasted really good! You have to try their wines.

Beyond the beautiful property and the super amazing delicious wines, this is a grand cru classe of 1855, and it is the only singular Premier grand cru in Sauternes. Definitely worth a visit.
