Maasai Maya Bistro

Went with friends who live nearby during my beach vacay in Chelem. Missing some down home comfort food. Phenomenal is all I can say fro the jungle atmosphere to the family staff to the food. Just made my trip to Chelem complete. Looking forward to their liquor license so I can have some great wine with my amazing meal. If you’re in the Yucatan you MUST eat here. Gracias to the staff and to my friends for recommendations like this place. See you guys in April on my next trip to Chelem

Our first cisit to this restaurant was during a norte at Christmas in 2017. We were so pleasantly surprised to find this gem, we have been back repeatedly throughout 2018! Although I love the pastas, my husband is enchanted by the grilled mero with garlic which is always a huge, thick chunk and tastes like steak! Our friends rave over the pizza which is baked in a woodfire pizza oven. Service is pretty good and the windows offer views over the malecon to the beach and Gulf. We have never been disappointed and if you live or vacation at the beach, it is nice to get a good quality dinner without driving to Merida.

Elio Al Mare is a great restaurant, well worth the couple of minute drive from downtown Progreso. (About $1.50 USD by Uber). The restaurant in right on the beach. You can dine inside or take a table al fresco overlooking the ocean. Either way the ambience is great. On our first visit we wandered in off the beach for lunch. We were the first guests. The waiter tried to explain (as we later figured out) that they didn't open for another half hour. Nonetheless he invited us in and promptly brought us drinks. The chef fired up the kitchen early for us. Great food. Try the ceviche. As we relaxed over our delightful lunch the place began to fill up. We realized our faux pas. Despite arriving before they even opened, we were made to feel welcome, including a visit from the charming owner, an elegant Italian lady.We returned a few days later for dinner. The lights were out. We thought they were closed. Only two staff were present. We thought they were shutting down. (We were there in the shoulder season). We were ready to turn around and go elsewhere but they insisted we come in. The lights came on and we were treated like they had expected us all along. Within minutes the restaurant was swarming with staff. The kitchen was going full out - just for us. Being an Italian restaurant, we went almost exclusively for pasta on this visit. Delicious. From what we were told - and I believe it - the pasta is made in-house. Not long after we arrived the owner came into the restaurant to supervise. She was again the consummate host. All the staff were friendly, professional and eager to please. The food was exceptional. Elio Al Mare is not the cheapest restaurant in Progreso, but is probably the best.We were there before the main tourist rush. We had no problem getting in (obviously) but were told that by the end of November you need reservations to get in.

Bistro del Mar

Bistro del mar is an eclectic Italian restaurant, near the sea, where we serve quality Italian food, homemade pasta and delicious bread made by the talented chef Ivan Reyes.

The location isn't the best but not every restaurant can start out on the Malecon. Chef Ivan has created an over extensive menu for just starting out. Honestly he needs to condense it so as not to overwhelm himself in the kitchen. It makes it difficult to continue to provide fresh items everyday. The homemade bread was very tasty as an appetizer. BYO Wine + a corkage fee. The Caesar salad was a little disappointing seeing it was originated in Tijuana in the 1920s - tomatoes obscure the flavors of the dressing. Croutons and perhaps some bacon would have been more appropriate. The main course - Putanesca pasta was an ample portion, hot from the stove with tomatoes, black olives, etc. My spouse ordered the risotto with clams and likewise found the portion sufficient and tasty. We did order extra Parmesan cheese. The dessert this night was only chocolate cake, NO tiramisu (my favourite). Not sure whether or not coffee was available. Please patronize this local Italian restaurant ad encourage Ivan to keep on moving forward!
