Along with its northerly neighbour, Blackburn, it forms the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen — a unitary authority area. It is known locally as "Darren" and its residents are known as "Darreners". The main road through Darwen is the A666 towards Blackburn to the north and Bolton to the south, and ultimately at the Pendlebury boundary with Irlams o' th' Height where it joins the A6, about 4 miles (6 km) north-west of Manchester. Darwen's population decreased to 28,046 in 2011 and is made up of five wards.

Have noticed this cafe driving past for a while and kept meaning to visit. Today I called in and was amazed at how good the food is. Cafe is very clean and smart with a varied healthy menu. The Budha boxes looked very good and were very popular. I had the smashed avacado on sourdough toast with poached egg, bacon and mushrooms. It was very tasty and was well presented. The coffee is also very good here. There is something on the menu for everyone here and the prices are very reasonable. Service is also good with very pleasant staff. Will be visiting regularly in future.Thanks very Much Mike! We will look forward to your next visit.

We visited the Black Olive last weekend just for a quick coffee as we passed by and we were very impressed to say the least. The interior is fresh, modern and classy. The staff were sprite and very welcoming on arrival, we were served straight away. Whilst we only had a couple of lattes (only £2.50 each), there were others eating. The food looked & smelt amazing. Had we not only eaten earlier that morning, we'd have been straight in there. We looked over the menu and there seemed enough to suit most, the prices were reasonable also. However, the main highlight and the main reason we actually stopped in were the cake jars. We had an Oreo one to take away and it was probably the best cake jar I've ever had. The buttercream was top notch! They had a variety of cake jars, plus what looked like fresh homemade brownies, flapjacks and rocky roads! Next time we will be in for food!

Came across this little gem one afternoon and I was amazed at the freshness and choice on offer! Each time ive been there is always plenty of customers in, either tucking into a full english or a fresh salad plate! Even got my boyfriend addicted too now :) the salad boxes always go down well - the spicy rice is amazing!
