Heard mixed reviews but was really looking forward to a night out and a meal with hubby. Were the only ones in the restaurant, awkward atmosphere as the 3 staff just stood and stared at us the whole time. We ordered spicy chicken and spring onion ginger beef. The spicy chicken was frustratingly uneatable. Not because of the huge amount of chunky dried red chillies all through it but the rest of the dish consisted of plate of small chopped neck and tail chicken bones with skin but no meat on I wouldn't serve my cat! Didn't even come with rice or anything had to order that separately -costing $31! Not happy at all. The beef and spring onion was $25 pretty steep for Chinese food and it was a very disappointing stir fry and beef was strange and had no texture. And yep you have to order rice separately. Service poor I told the waitress that I couldn't eat the plate of bones and she came back to offer me ice water as a solution even though we already had water at the table. We were asked again if we enjoyed the meals and again i said we were not happy with the meals but this was just ignored...? If I was the waitress I would of apologised sincerely and offered a replacement meal or refunded it. Instead we were short changed to top it off. And given a loyalty card with a stamp on it. A couple hours later we both have upset stomachs and I have had vomiting and diarrhoea all night. Won't be going back.

Golden Island Chinese Restaurant

Our expectations were low when entering a Chinese restaurant in Oamaru as experience has taught us that the menu is usually very kiwised and rather bland in provincial towns. We were pleasantly surprised to discover that they had introduced an additional menu that focused on more traditional and authentic Chinese dishes. All dishes that we tasted from this menu were full of flavour and represented good value as the servings were generous. This restaurant also caters for large tourist groups which arrive by the bus load and tend to swamp the operation for the 45 minutes that they have to be fed and watered. If you time it wrong your meal could take a little longer than anticipated as these groups tend to take precedence over other customers. The service staff were good and knowledgeable.

Stopped in for takeaway Chinese on a recommendation. The place is old but don't let that deceive you, the place is spotlessly clean and food is fresh and cooked whilst you wait. They sell Chinese, fish and chips and burgers. Even their chips are made freshly on site daily. We ordered lemon chicken, Chilli beef and Nasi Goreng. Firstly the Lemon Chicken was the best we have ever had, I highly rate that. The chilli beef was disappointing in that it wasn't hot to our palate at all, i would ask for extra chilli next time, though on the plus side it was a very generous serve and plenty of fresh veges. The Nasi Goreng was a 50/50 rice and vegetable dish, whilst it was nice it wasn't what i have experienced in Indonesia, perhaps it is their take on Nasi Goreng as the owners are Chinese and very friendly. All in all i would recommend this place and will go back there again.

We have eaten here three or so times (for lunch) and have never been disappointed. Service is fast (certainly in the absence of tour buses (which we have not yet experienced)). Wouldn't hesitate to dine here again when pining for Chinese food ....

This restaurant is tucked down a side street. The food was ok - the fish was a bit disappointing as it was just a wedge of pre-frozen fish. The chips were nice and the food is reasonably priced.
