Lydgate State Park

When we visited Kauai, the waves were very rough. Lydgate State Park has an ocean break rock wall that minimizes the waves and allows for an enjoyable, safe swim or snorkel experience. Also the area that this park is in is soo beautiful, tables for a picnic and nice changing/shower bathhouses.

Secret Falls Trail

Reviewed By U725PSalanh - San Diego, United States

My wife and I rent our own kayak (from WailuaKayakAdventures) and we kayaked down the Wailua River to get to the trail. It took us about 45-min to get there. The water was calm and it was very enjoyable. I'm not sure but I believe they also provide guided tours if you're interested. The hike is easy and you can easily do it on your own. The hike to the falls wasn't too hard. The only tricky part was crossing the river about 10-min into the hike. We did this hike about 8 years ago and there was a rope that you could hold onto while crossing the river. The rope is no longer there, perhaps due to COVID. You have to make sure to go upstream a little bit to avoid the rapids. Even in the "calmer" part of the river, the current was still fairly strong. The water went up to our hips. Just go slow and have a hiking stick and you'll be fine. Another thing that was really nice was that they've installed a boardwalk about halfway into the hike along the river. This part of the hike used to be SUPER muddy, but now it's a piece of cake.... very nice addition! Once you get to the falls, it's a wonderful view and you can even swim under the waterfalls. It's an easy swim and very refreshing! We stayed at the falls for about an hour. We had packed a lunch and some snacks and just soaked it all up at the waterfalls. The entire trip took us about 6 hours from the time we left the rental place and back there. We've done this kayak/hike 3 times time over the past 25 years and it's our favorite hike in the world! This is a must in Kauai if you enjoy kayaking and hiking!

I actually found out about this rental spot from a reviewer on Tripadvisor, and he was spot on...RENT HERE!!! Best price, friendly local staff, SHORT (5 minute) kayak up to the trail to Secret Falls, then they show you where to kayak to get to a swimming hole with a ledge you can jump off! Also stop by Fern Grotto on they Kayak back. BEST DAY I had on the island was renting from here :)
