Shadows on the Teche

Located in New Iberia’s Main Street District, set among towering live oak trees draped with Spanish moss on the banks of Bayou Teche, The Shadows, built in 1834 for sugar planter David Weeks, paints a vivid picture of life for the four generations that made this property their home. The first National Trust for Historic Preservation site in the Gulf South, The Shadows is a Classic Revival-style home with a Louisiana Colonial floor plan and a garden that is as breathtaking as the history preserved here. More than 17,000 letters, invoices, and receipts provide information on the daily life of people in 19th century New Iberia as the sugar industry developed. Collections in period rooms also illustrate the life of a sugar cane growing family on Louisiana's frontier. 2 1/2 acres of gardens depict a southern garden of the 1920s-1940s.

Beautifully preserved historic home that is nearly 90% furnished with things original to the home. It is almost as if you go back in time and can hear the walls talk because of how authentic to the period things are. The grounds and gardens are also lovely along the bayou in the rear and the beautiful historic live oaks dripping with spanish moss in front. It is located is such a lovely area of New Iberia and is in walking distance to really great restaurants. I would highly recommend if you are in the area that you take a step back in time because you will be glad you did.

The gardens by Lake Peigneur are simply stunning and the Rip Van Winkle B&B was delightful! I highly recommend staying here and enjoying the wonderful hospitality, a tour of the Jefferson house and strolling the grounds...peacocks, a resident kitty named Kit will greet you. The on-site cafe is very good for lunch too! Thanks for a delightful respite!

Konriko Company Store

Reviewed By WardTravels - Hagerstown, United States

This little store is part of the Conrad Rice Mill property and is full of souvenirs from Acadia, from mugs and postcards, to cookbooks and rice products. There was a crock pot full of a rice dish to sample, and it was delicious! In this store, you can buy tickets to tour the mill property, and the tour consists of a video and a guided tour of the mill itself. We HIGHLY recommend the tour, and especially our tour guide, a spunky retired teacher named Kesla. This was possibly the best field trip we have ever taken as a group of home schoolers. Our tour guide, Kesla, was THE BEST!!! She is a former elementary school teacher and college professor, and her speaking style was fun and informative. She clearly loves the rice mill and the history around it, and was able to share so much information and history with us as we toured. Her enthusiasm for the mill and the local history was contagious and we had so much fun listening to her stories! No question was too hard for her to handle, and everyone, from the ten-year-old crowd to the adults, had an amazing time. If we are ever in Louisiana again, we will definitely come back for another tour, and we will call ahead to make sure Kesla is there!
