John Dillon Park

Reviewed By joanpaula2017 - Long Lake, United States

I have been wanting to visit the John Dillon Park for a year, but I waited too long last year and missed the date for the close of the season. It was well worth the wait! I wanted a place to walk that would be safe, not too physically challenging but would showcase some of the beautiful scenery of the area. The John DIllon Park met all of these qualifications in an outstanding manner. The trails are well marked and very well maintained. There are shorter and longer hikes making the experience very flexible. The views are outstanding. My favorite was the fishing dock. We walked past some of the lean to camping shelters and I was very impressed! Most of the campsites had two shelters with a fire pit, cooking grate and firewood, picnic table, composting toilet area and water. I did not have a chance to check these out, but there are also boating opportunities! I should probably have started with this, but one of the most welcoming aspect of the park was the Welcoming Center! It was staffed, I believe, by a student from Paul Smiths College. He was extremely pleasant and helpful and set a relaxed tone for our visit. He assured me that our dog was welcome and pointed out a water bowl! The Center had a good variety of reference materials, including maps, and emergency information. Needless to say, indoor plumbing was also reassuring! We wound up staying for only about an hour, but this is a site that could easily provide an all-day event or an overnight experience. This is the second Paul Smiths attraction that we have visited and I have been completely impressed by them both!

Buttermilk Falls

You can hear the falls from the (FREE) parking lot ~ 2 minute hike from the Parking area and your there. EASY.. there are at least 3 picnic table that we saw as well as fire pits and outhouses. The falls are on the medium side. the area was well maintained ~ the only thing I could say is on a wet day take precautions most of the hike is Larger smooth rocks that would be slippery.
