This 870-foot stone monument, thought to have been created from the remains of a volcano, is the center of many Indian religious ceremonies.

Off the bucket list!!! We finally made it to Devils Tower in NE Wyoming. We had stayed the night before in Rapid City SD and on our way back to Colorado we stopped at the Tower. From the first glimpse some 25 miles away we both said “wow!” The drive from Rapid City to the Monument is quite beautiful and a great way to appreciate the West in all its history and glory! The Devils Tower is a well maintained park area with a nice visitors center that has the geologic information. The Tower itself at some 950’+ is awe inspiring and a great place to take the few mile, mostly flat, walk around its base! Truly a Close Encounter of the BEST Kind!!!

Tower Trail

Having seen many, many pictures of this site online and having most people say, "Oh, yeah, you mean that place in Close Encounters?" we traveled to Devils Tower not sure what to expect. We now firmly believe that a picture of Devils Tower should appear in the definition of awesome in the dictionary. No picture does it justice. From the towering columns and the frightening boulder field to the soaring eagles and the struggling climbers, every foot of the trail is awe-inspiring. The trail is fairly easy and has many benches along the route. Does and their babies snack cautiously nearby on the bushes alongside the trail, much closer than can imagine. We encourage you to sit on one of the benches and just take in the imposing and magnificent presence of this monument.

Devils Tower Trading Post

Typical souvenir shop, but the staff are very friendly and welcoming. Added bonus, ice cream for the kids after a long, warm day at the tower! :)
