Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail

Reviewed By mercedcampgirl - Orange, United States

My husband and I walked from our hotel to the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail planning to see Cannery Row, the bay, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and the Steinbeck Plaza and to eat on the pier. We were able to do all this in a four mile round trip. The trail actually is 18 miles long, but you can pick a section and just walk a portion of it as we did. Please be aware of trail etiquette here, especially when it is a weekend or during tourist season. These common sense manners are from the Monterey website: "Remember these guidelines: Just as on the street, please stay to the right whenever possible. Please do not walk or ride abreast in large groups so that you block the Trail for other users. Stop and look both ways before crossing a street intersection. Remember that you are sharing the park with others. Please be considerate and patient, especially in congested areas." The trail passes Monterey pines, cypresses and other beautiful trees, murals, lovely bay views, glimpses of wildlife like resting harbor seals or floating sea otters, lots of good restaurants, historic Victorian homes, shopping opportunities and TONS of photo opportunities, like the historic Monterey Canning Company. Please see photos. Bike or walk, the trail is great! There is a free town trolley available to access significant points along the trail from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
