I inadvertently left my last review for The George Inn on the old site which I don’t believe the current owners have access to. The current people moved from seafood restaurant Tall Ships in Gloucester to come to St Briavels. The C17th George Inn is situated by the castle and has a car park behind it, and a garden with seating which has views of the castle and moat. It is dog friendly. We rang with very little notice that day, and were able to book a table so close to Christmas, with friends. Impressed! Amazing service and friendliness. The food variety was very good with a vast array of specials, as well as a Christmas menu. The turkey and trimmings were delicious. The sea bream made a good alternative to turkey for those who didn’t want to be “turkeyed out” before the 25th. Another of us had pork. The quantities were very good. Everything was hot, fresh and well presented. Desserts were very plentiful. The chocolate orange mousse cup defeated our chocoholic friend! The cheese and biscuits were plentiful and not the usual varieties. The smoked cheese in particular was good. A selection of biscuit types and vegetables finished the plate. Lastly we finished with coffees all round. They were served with a hand made raspberry topped truffle. We felt utterly spoiled! The staff were friendly and efficient, never rushing us, nor hanging over us while we caught up with one another. The inn itself with its dark beams, fireplaces and little nooks, is so essentially C17th British. It hasn’t been modernised so is a joy to experience. Real ale is available as well as local ciders and beer. Rooms are available upstairs for those who wish to stay locally.

Prospect Cottage

If you want peace and tranquillity, then Prospect Cottage fulfills your needs as it is situated in an idyllic setting on the River Wye. Offa's Dyke footpath runs alongside the property and together with the myriad of footpaths in the area it is an ideal base for walkers. Cyclists are also welcome and we have secure parking & storage. All the other attractions of the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean are within easy reach. We aim to source locally produced food wherever possible.

Gorgeous cottage in the woods - a perfect retreat

We came here for an anniversary break and it was wonderful. Nestled in the valley overlooking the river, you can sit on the verandah and watch the sun go down, and just be absorbed in nature. Spotlessly clean, very friendly and pleasant hosts, and a delicious breakfast! Ideal for walkers and they offer a pick up and drop off service if needed. It is a long way down a track (whose condition has deteriorated due to building work up the road, which is not within the owners' control), and mobile signal is patchy, but they do explain these things on their website - and have fully working WiFi so you are not completely cut off if you need to be able to receive messages etc! We would thoroughly recommend it for a peaceful/walking break.

We stayed here at the end of October 2019 as my birthday treat, and it was awful from start to finish! We ended up having a full refund, plus a refund for our bar bill! Do not be fooled by the photographs on the website - read trip advisor reviews!
