I stopped in for lunch at Mercado Central, and after reading a number of reviews, determined this was the best spot on the outer rim to get a less-touristy experience. I wanted to try a true Chilean specialty, and I got the caldillo de congrio (conger eel stew). It's more a thin soup than a thick stew, and the conger eel is just a meaty white fish. I loved the pebre that I was given to go with my bread - tangy, salty, and super-flavorful! They didn't speak much English but with limited Spanish there was no trouble communicating. The restaurant only has about 7 tables but at around 11:30am on a Sunday morning, I was the first. While I was there, 3 or 4 other tables were sat, so they do seem fairly popular.All of the other locals that came in had the paila marina, a mixed seafood soup that looked fantastic. The caldillo was CLP5000 while the paila marina was CLP4000 with a wider variety of seafood, so maybe I should have tried that instead (though the caldillo was still terrific!).

Avoid the popular restaurants in this market and look for this smaller establishment. The food was amazing and well cooked. The flavors were well balanced. I had fried fish with Fries and neither were greasy. The flavors rather than oil came through.

It has a good local reputation which unfortunately was not deserved on our visit. The food was not well presented and the fish was not filleted which did not go down well. A fish restaurant that does not offer fries will never be acceptable to teenage diners! Overall, an unsatisfactory meal experience which spoilt a perfectly happy, sunny afternoon.The Chef cannot be happy with the quality or presentation of the food.
