We stopped in Spalt en route to Munich, the Rotes Ross seemed to the least unpleasant restaurant to have a meal.As the outside temperature was touching forty, we ate inside, a good choice as the dining room was cool and spotless. The welcome was very friendly and we were made to feel 'at home' as soon as we entered. The menu was the usual staple of German lunches and that is a good sign, we selected sauerbraten and salateller. Both arrived almost immediately and we were surprised to note that the sauerbraten was served with a green salad rather than sweet red cabbage. Both dishes were very pleasant and the beer was superb, which is not surprising as Spalt is the epicentre of good beer.No downside except the lack of sweet red cabbage and the bland sauce.Tim

In the heart of the Franconian Lake District, in close proximity to the Great Brombachsee, our restaurant and beer garden Kastanienhof is located in Pleinfeld. Enjoy our culinary delicacies diverse with varied creations of Fränkische and NEW GERMAN LIGHT
Kastanienhof offers typical local food in great quality. The taste is fantastic and the portions are very generous. The service is good and helpful - even some English is spoken. In summer sitting outside on the terrace enjoying a nice cold beer and some local sausage with potato salad is just the Bavarian feeling of "Gemütlichkeit" I miss when not at home.In winter the restaurant invites to sit in the cosy and well decorated inside. The style is typical Franconia "Wirtshaus" without being being too tacky. During high season it can be advisable to make a reservation if you want to sit outside. In the winter months you need to check if the place is open - especially during late evenings - as they might close for the night if no customers are in later than 18:00.Thanks for the great review, absolutely. But you know our house very well?If you should be our guest again, please login. We would like to invite you to a meal and a beer.Best regardsyour host

i had been there 3 nights, fine hotel and fine staff...the price is too fair and breakfast is too rich, i really enjoyed my stay there, especially the hotel near a garden park, so every night i had running around 40 minutes as i like to do :)
