El Ranchero

Had the recommended three amigos (chicken, shrimp & scallops with vegetables-zucchini, mushrooms, peppers, onions & tomatoes). Excellent choice. Husband had steak fajitas, which came with guacamole, lettuce, sour cream and tomatoes on the side. Peppers, onions & tomatoes sautéed with the steak which was sizzling. Began with a lime margarita— $2.50 on Thursdays. Waitstaff is very accommodating and fills special requests. Portion are large. Could not finish. I can see why this is the number one restaurant in emporia. So glad we came.

Don Pancho's

Unsurprisingly, there aren’t a lot of dining options in Emporia, especially if one eliminates the chains. Our go-to when traveling in the South has become Mexican restaurants. We have eaten at both this one and its near-by competitor El Ranchero. Both are good but we consider Don Pancho’s to have the edge. In fairness to El Ranchero, it has the better ambiance, but we prefer to carry out and eat in our motel room. The food is tasty, with large portions, and appears to us to be freshly prepared. Prices are reasonable. Staff are friendly and efficient. “Nuff said.

Sorry to report that both of us found problems with our meals. I usually enjoy Taco Bell, but I finally figured out what was wrong. The rice was crunchy. At first I thought it was an old flour tortilla that had dried out. I was wrong. The rice was hard. Alan is not a fan of Taco Bell, but he will eat KFC. So we thought this was a good compromise. He ordered two sides of slaw but tossed them because of an off flavor. We've never had a successful meal in Emporia. And the gas prices are more expensive here than in either direction. Avoid getting off the interstate here.
