Top 3 Mediterranean food in Cape May, New Jersey, United States

August 31, 2020 Frederic Celentano

Find out what Mediterranean restaurants to try in Cape May. Yes, Cape May is, technically, on the Jersey Shore. But it’s the antithesis of the Jersey Shore you’ll see on TV—instead of nightclubs and tanning parlors, you’ll find Victorian mansions and a famous lighthouse.

George's Place

Visited Cape May last week and stopped at George's 2x. They made a very good and quick breakfast sandwich/coffee for us to take birdwatching; very nice staff. Day 2, hubby hit the trail and I came here for a peaceful breakfast on my own. Delish bagel, coffee (they have excellent Bonne Maman jelly packets....blueberry!) and time to read! I was hoping for chipped beef, but only on the weekends. Again, very nice staff. The place is pretty small overall, and I felt trapped in the booth...a tight squeeze! Waitress said I picked the smallest one, so changed to a more comfy table. Lots of parking right out front this time of year and they don't start vigorous ticketing until 10:00 am. Did not come for dinner as the menu was heavy on Mediterranean flavors; not our fave. Do give this spot a try; they are open all year, but with some reduced hours.

Mythos

On our most recent visit. we were quite disappointed to find that our favorite Cape May restaurant, Pier House, was still under construction. However, we were delighted to discover that Mythos was still going strong! We sat in the main dining room this visit and were happy to have Gary as our waiter - (he's a waiter from Pier House). I ordered the keftedes and was not disappointed. They were delicious... crispy on the outside and full of flavor on the inside with that special touch of mint. My husband had the grilled octopus appetizer and raved about how tender it was. I had chicken souvlaki and the hubs had swordfish 'skaras for dinner. Both were outstanding. We ended our meal with a shared dessert special, which again did not disappoint. If your're in the mood for a wonderful Greek-inspired meal, Mythos will certainly fit the bill!

We’ve always stopped at Pier House for at least one meal every time we’ve been in Cape May, and we’ve always enjoyed it. During our most recent stay in Cape May, we were excited to try the newly reopened Pier House for a Sunday breakfast on our way out of town. What a disappointment. The decor inside is really pretty and well chosen, so that’s a plus. But it’s dirty! The salt and pepper shakers on the table were filthy to the point that I couldn’t see using them and then touching food. The sugar and creamer caddies were almost empty and we were there shortly after they opened. We were maybe the third table in the entire place. So basically no one cleaned or restocked for at least a day. The menu itself was really interesting, and most of the food was really good. I had a breakfast bowl with home fries, poached eggs, and pork belly that had a lot of potential if the pork belly were better prepared. It just tasted fatty and bland. The rest of the table had really good meals though. Super fresh ingredients and very tasty. The service, however, was just awful. We waited quite awhile for our food. Oddly enough, the manager stopped by the table while we were waiting for our food to see if we needed anything. Then, once we got the food, no one, not even the server, came to the table until they came back with the check about 20 minutes later. Service throughout the entire dining room was the same. The manager would randomly walk through, but I have no idea what purpose she was serving. She wasn’t running food or stopping at tables with food. And she definitely wasn’t checking for cleanliness or stocked condiments. I really wanted to love the new Pier House as much as I did the old one, but without better management, we won’t be going back.Thank you for your honest review. We are so sorry to read you won't be returning but we will most certainly share your insights with the team in regards to your experience. Again, thank you for the feedback and we will work harder to meet our guests' expectations.
