Located in a strip mall off Hwy 68. Seated promptly. Waitress very attentive and able to give you insights about menu items.You can get either much of dinner portion sizes. The pace is fast it not hurried. Will definitely return on our next visit.

BBQ Joes

On my most recent visit to BBQ Joes, I was expecting what in the past has always been some very good Q. Well, I was disappointed. Any decent BBQ joint will have the knowledge that good brisket takes at least 8 to 12 hours to cook to the point of 200 to 205 degrees before the collagen breaks down leaving a nice tender however still juicy product. I ordered a two meat plate. I chose sliced brisket and pulled pork. I'm a brisket lover. I've smoked countless whole packer brisket at home and have long ago found the only way to cook this high quality beef cut is low and slow. That's a low temperature of 180 to 220 degrees for no less than 8 hours and up to 12 or even 14 hours depending on the weight of the uncooked product. I've been to BBQ Joes many many times. Most often, they served up very good Q. On this visit to BBQ Joes, the brisket was anything but tender. Along with that, it was sliced with the grain as opposed to across the grain. There must be someone new cutting the meat as anyone whom has any decent knowledge of how to slice brisket knows this. Brisket has long thick muscle fiber, and even when cooked to the correct temperature, cutting with the grain results in a less than acceptable texture. In the end, I received brisket which was hard to cut and had an unacceptable mouth feel. Smokiness of the meat was lacking as well. I did not see any resemblance of of a smoke ring nor that nice spicy bark which comes from a good dry rub and long hours in the smoker. I also found the brisket as well as the pork to be quite oily. The brisket was simply a disaster.The pulled pork, while not as terribly cooked as the brisket had its own issues. Unfortunately, it came doused with what appeared to be eastern barbecue style sauce which is nothing but vinegar and spices. Vinegar and spice is either a marinade or a salad dressing not a sauce. I have no idea of why anyone would douse their food this way. It adds nothing to improve the flavor of the pork and in fact really masks what flavor this under-smoked pork which was served up. Again, there was an overall lack of smokiness of the pork and certainly a total lack of addition of some of the bark and smoke ring which generally is mixed in to add spiciness to the meat when served. The pork, just like the brisket was oily. Both were so oily to the point that adding any tomato based sauce was to no avail. It wouldn't stick. I suspect that (Monday's) barbecue was smoked for less than 2 or 3 hours and then finished in an oven. I can't see results being from low and slow smoking. I also suspect this is the reason for the meat being oily. This usually is caused by letting the fat collect around the meat as opposed to it dripping off during the long cooking period. The hush-puppy's were decent as usual. They are served as sort of like small donuts. They were fine as always. And the fries, well, they are what is called seasoned I guess, they have some sort of batter like flakes on them. This clearly distracts from what any (decent) french fried potato requires and that is simply cut and fried till crisp on the outside and steaming hot inside. The addition of (spices) is fine, adding batter takes away from the overall taste and mouth feel. I find them greasy and simply a poor product. Simple straight cut or crinkle cut fries are a perfect product. Adding a light dusting of salt and any number of various ground spices or herbs is fine, anything more results in an unacceptable product in my opinion. The only thing with my latest visit to BBQ Joes which was positive, was the service. It was excellent. Of course the serve had nothing to do with the poor quality of the food, she however did a great job. Great service is always appreciated.This trip to BBQ Joes was simply very disappointing. I will give BBQ Joes another try. However if they can't improve upon what they are serving now, It will likely be my last visit. All of this of course, is in my opinion.

We were a little surprised by the limited menu, but the chopped pork was ok if you like the red slaw and vinegar sauce. Both are specialties of the house. The hush puppies were wonderful. My husband wanted beef and we were disappointed that there was only pork. He got the sandwich and did not really like it, as he wanted traditional bbq sauce. Service was good and the staff friendly.
