Top 10 Walking Tours in Tunis, Tunis Governorate

April 22, 2022 Etsuko Causey

Founded by the Berbers in the 2nd millennium BCE, the city of Tunis has been controlled by Phoenicians, Romans, Arab Muslims, the Ottomans, the Spanish, the French and the Germans, finally achieving independence as the capital of Tunisia in 1956. This history has made Tunis a mélange of ancient and modern cultures. The medina is a network of narrow alleyways, mosques, mausoleums, palaces and a souq where shoppers haggle over the price of everything from filigreed gold to inexpensive souvenirs.

Hassan IDALI, our guide, took us on a great walk from the village up the mountain. Hassan was extremely knowledgeable about the local area and wildlife making this a very good visit for all. Hassan was brilliant with the kids and got them a mule to ride on which they loved and I would highly recommend- my kids are 8 and 11 and were happy to ride instead of walk! The walk was not too challenging physically but a beautiful to experience the mountains

From Tunis, the road runs alongside a partially restored Roman aqueduct, reminding that Tunis, since ancient times, has been drinking spring water from the mountain of Zaghouan. Along the way, fans of archeology will appreciate the site of Oudna, a Punic city that has become Roman. The so-called “Laberii” villa with its thirty rooms on 2,300 m² deserves a special visit for its mosaics, an archaeological site well preserved includes an astonishing amphitheater that could once accommodate 20,000 spectators. Then we will visit the Andalusian medina of Zaghouan, to finish with Thuburbo Majus, an ancient city that experienced a decline in the middle of the third century before a brilliant renaissance in the fourth century, leading it to proclaim itself Respublica Felix Thuburbo Majus. The vandal invasion, in the middle of the fifth century, put an end to the prosperity of the city and brought it back to the rank of a town which soon after the Arab conquest was deserted.

This place is so serene, so beautiful, so worth a visit. I fell in love with this place the minute we arrived and I had the bombolini. You must try the donuts. The art pieces are really nice here, also. The flowers have a deep color hue. The white walls all over. It is just a must see location. If you have time spend a full day here. There is plenty to do and is not that far from Tunis.
