This is a fantastic opportunity to get a glimpse into modest Costa Rican life. Your experience will start with your hosts Gabriel and Mima walking you around the farm area and showing you the different fruits and vegetables they grow. You will be using some of those ingredients to cook a traditional meal during your upcoming cooking lesson. Mima's and Gabriel's kitchen is clean and well kept - however, it is rustic and very small. You will use the outside area to do most of your prep work and the final cooking will be a demonstration as there isn’t much space to cook together in the kitchen. You will also see and get to use few really innovative appliances like a solar oven and a stationary bicycle that powers a blender! The cooking part of the experience will last for 30-45 minutes. You will learn how to make a pico de gallo tomato salsa from scratch and also the plantain dessert, which is their own recipe, inspired by old traditional Costa Rican cooking.

Inclusions: Private cooking lesson/demonstration with your hosts Gabriel and Mima, Local alcohol (1-2 glasses), Non-alcoholic beverages, All taxes, fees and handling charges, Gratuities, Lunch, Dinner

Exclusions: Hotel pickup and drop-off

We had a great time on our tour with Alexander. Educational, fun, great exercise, and an exciting way to see San Jose. From my initial phone call, Roberto was very accommodating for us on short notice, and arranged a tour for our time schedule. We really enjoyed the stop at cafe machado, too, for a local, expert coffee experience. Highly recommended for an active tour.

We had limited time in San Jose but this tour was a great way to explore and taste the city. Love that it is locally owned and operated, and I can tell that Erik really cares about his business and customs. Erik is a knowledgeable and professional guide, he was great at communicating by email and WhatsApp and went out of his way to give us a private tour due to COVID concerns. He was also really understanding and accommodating when we were running more than a little late due to long lines at customs. I would classify this as more of a cultural tour with a walk through the markets as opposed to a true food tour, but we were able to purchase some amazing coffee and the restaurant at the end was delicious!
